when you consider the opposition went on to win the world cup the USa weren't even in the same league competitively, they were right on the try line at the other end of the pitch, and then the yank winger outstripped the supposedily fastest man in rugby I think it even ranks up there with this one although not quite.

Phil Jagielka's penalty against United in the FA Cup semi final, 19th April 2009.
I'd fully expected us to get beat in the 90 minutes & our record was awful in penalty shootouts until that point. Cahill missed our 1st & I'd accepted it wasn't our time but things went our way from that point & it was left for the player who'd been our most consistent performer & who'd missed a penalty in the shootout that we lost against Fiorentina the previous year to take the last 1.
That going in was probably the best moment of my life, meant we were heading back for the final (which, incidently, was on my birthday - only the 2nd time in Everton's history we've played on that date & the 1st was a long time before I was born). As I'm typing this the hairs are standing up on the back of my neck.

Asprillas Hatick for Newcastle against Barca in the Champions League
Newcastle's 5nil win against Manure.
Englands Ashes win last year - I was there at the Oval. Amazing day!
Englands Euro 96 run to the Semi's - most enjoyable tournament in my memory other than Italia '90!
Lewis Hamilton winning the F1 Drivers championship at the death from Massa two seasons ago.
Epic.

End.
England winning the Rugby World Cup RWC 2003 for me.
The final came after a buildup of a year or so when England were beating everyone. The expectation was there, but the team had definitely peaked the summer before so there were concerns that this was one competition too far for the old-timers in the team. Despite this, they were still favourites to win, as they had some serious talent in the team and the huge advantage of a habit of winning. On the day, Australia, to some extent the ref Andre Watson, adn England themselves made sure it didn't all go England's way.
At half time, England had it in the bag. Australia then got back to level the scores to force extra time. Wilkinson got his famous drop goal in the last couple of minutes, Mike Catt booted the ball into the top stand, the whistle went and the rest is history.
Watching this in a packed pub at 9.00am was quite an experience, the place went completely ballistic when Jonny's drop goal went over and we didn't stop celebrating until 5.00 am the next morning.
It was an emotional day. I still haven't been able to watch a full recording of the game since then, it's too painful. Ben Kaye dropping the ball on the line when we could have buried Australia properly, Australia clawing their way back into the game against the odds, Watson giving the Aussies penalties in front of the posts for infringing ono our own scrums, and memories of everyone crying in the last 10 minutes out of fear, frustration and expectation.
However it's still my favourite TV sporting moment, I think I'll find a copy soon and settle down and relive it all again sometime soon.
