This is really sad. I don't know if anyone's linked this on here yet, but the chap has gone missing during a channel swim and was apparently right near the pilot vessel when it happened. Those onboard must be beside themselves.

Bit of an update since my last post - I've more or less mastered breathing on freestyle and I'm starting to do lengths as well as trying to perfect my technique. It's still work in progress but I feel more and more confident, however I'm still very much struggling to tread water and this at times throws me off, especially at the deep end.

I've tried working on my breaststroke and the kicking. I'm okay but once it comes to applying it for treading I tend to struggle and end up getting very tired. I think there's an element of fear involved as well as I've always taken comfort it being able to touch the bottom of the pool with my feet.

I think learning to tread will be the final obstacle in my learning journey. After a year and half and learning 3 strokes this is the only thing holding me back.

clap Nicely done, M12345! Pleased to hear that your journey's going well. I hope that, bar the momentary treading issues, you are enjoying it all smile

Can't quite get over this...

How on earth has the support boat lost sight, normally they're 5-15m away?

I heard some guys talking about this in a coffee shop in Devon last week, whilst on holiday.
One said that they believe he could have had a heart attack and went under. Even if he was close to the boat, it could be too late to capture him.

Anyone following the World Championships in Fukuoka (despite the lack of BBC TV coverage)?

A day's swimming to remember yesterday, Marchand's 400IM was incredible. Looking forward to the 100 and 200 free, Matt Richards and Tom Dean looked good in the heats this morning and Richards' split in the relay heat yesterday was seriously quick (46.8).

Evening all

Hope you can help. I recorded my first ever open water swim on my Fenix 7, and all I got was this crappy line. The blue is what I actually did.

Is it salvageable?

Did you bob around for a bit in the water before setting off with your arm underwater? GPS signal is lost underwater and usually it recovers on your stroke recovery and then the software joins the dots (thats assuming freestyle, if you were swimming breststroke it will never get a signal), but I bet it never started with a GPS signal and so was not able to re acquire

Yeah I think you're right, didn't give it much time to get a lock in hindsight, then my "swimming", well splashing around was a combination of front crawl, breaststroke and on my back. Was only swimming for just under 15mins, and it appears to only be about 375 yards, so no great loss.

Yeah sounds about right. If you want a better track wear a swim cap and put your watch in the cap on the back of your head. It should hold a GPS signal the whole time. Of course it means you can't see any data and there is always the risk of the cap coming off and expensive loss.

What I do is tread water with my arm out of the water until it has a solid GPS lock. Then press start and begin swimming. If it starts with a good lock it should re lock a few times and then the dots get joined.

Thanks for the tip. Might give it another go tomorrow evening and see if it works better.

Photographic proof I was actually in the sea biglaugh

It will have no GPS while doing breaststroke. Crawl and backstroke allow it to lock during the time above water, then "join the dots".

Me again. My little jaunt above has encouraged me to do a little more, especially as I live just down the road from Calshot and Lepe so have water on my doorstep. The only issue is they're stoney rather than sand.

Is there a recommended shoe that I can also swim in? I'm not looking to be out for ages, just a little dip, but I don't fancy walking over sharp stones etc.

Thanks again.

Cheap flip flops, stones on them near the shore, put up with a few stones until you get the water to take the weight!

I can't stand swimming with anything on my feet, feels all wrong..have tried wetsuit boots, trainers, vibram five fingers....just lost a bit of weight so it didn't hurt so much hehe

Seriously though, after a few weeks, feet really toughen up very quickly...after a summer I could walk on stones with no issues, whereas at the start, walking to the toilet block on the prom in bare feet was hard.

Wear your feet in.

Sad bit of news...

Helen Smart: Former British Olympic swimmer dies aged 43 - https://www.bbc.com/sport/swimming/66517148

200back stroke at the Sydney Olympics (and was Helen Don-Duncan at that time), apparently went suddenly at just 43 frown

Quick request for some advice.

My wife has been taking our 8yo son to swimming lessons at the local leisure centre after school every Tuesday afternoon (30 min group sessions) for two years. After a bit of grief from the young un complaining that the instructor was a disinterested teenager he moved up a group and seems to enjoy it. He's keen and tells me he enjoys the lessons, alas I am always working so don't get to see him in action.

We have come away on our first post-Covid foreign holiday to a lovely villa with a pool. My immediate observation is that he's not a very good swimmer when compared to other younger, less experienced kids.

Any tips on online resources I might use to help him improve? He's at the point where he's good with a float, has the correct body position etc, but as soon as he swims without the float it's a weak doggy paddle with his legs trailing low in the water with associated drag.

I've tried to explain that he needs to get his bum and legs higher in the water, he understands that, but actually improving his technique is something I'm struggling with. It's over 40yrs since I learned to swim and I can't recall how we were taught.

Some 1-2-1 lessons back home will probably help, but I'm keen to do something whilst we are here and have a pool we can make use of all day for a fortnight.

It’s been a while but a little update on PB Jnr2’s progress since April…

She’s been selected as part of the NSW State Para Dev Squad, which is a great first step of recognition of progress. We had kinda thought she would get there on the strength of performance at the Gold Coast event.

What we didn’t expect was the invite to the Para Swim Futures Camp at the end of September. This is for those that are on the cusp of breaking into the National team, and in Jnr2’s case (and the case of the other 5 junior age swimmers going) is because she has been noted as potential for Brisbane 2032.

It’ll be 3 days at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra with the other swimmers vying for spots in the future Australian Swim Squads. Should be a great experience.

Last week she swam in the NSW Senior State SC Comp and took 1st in age category for the 100BK MC and 200IM MC, with 7th and 9th overall. For both events she was in the pool with Ashley van Rjisvijk who swam for Australia at Tokyo.

Next week it’s the Australian National SC Comp so a couple of days of intense competition and then hopefully a few weeks of taking it a bit cruisy before the LC season gets going.

Finally, if anyone has an Instagram account, please follow chloe.oz3 - Chloe is a Para Swim Futures swimmer whom I reckon will be at LA28 if she’s not at Paris next year who also has her own photography business, Click Clo, focussing on MC swimmers. If she doesn’t make it as a swimmer, her photos are first rate…
