Training/racing update
Overall it's going well. Had a benchmarking race on Saturday at the Great Langdale Christmas Pudding 10k and won in 30:28 (full results: www.ukresults.net/2007/langpud1.html ). Unfortunately it turns out the course is 100-300m short so somewhat frustrating but a win's a win anyway and second place was the newly-crowned Cumbrian XC Champion. Conditions were perfect - cold, sunny and no wind. The course was undulating out-and-back with a long(ish) climb at about 4 miles which I used to break away from second place. I had been suffering with a heavy cold for the 3 days before the race but was recovered enough not to notice it during the event. Now got 3 weeks of heavy training before the next race on Sunday 13th Jan - another 10k but hopefully on an accurate course this time.
I hope everyone else's (preparations for) festive racing is going well and you all run well over the next few weeks. The cold weather is the perfect excuse to buy more kit
Cheers,
E.

Very interesting thread, didn't think there would any other runners on PH. I've always thought I'm one of the few people who race in the UK in cars and on foot!
I started running with the Tadworth 10 (10 Mile X-Country) in January 2005 and have enjoyed running ever since, its a lot more honest than motorsport where your finishing position is far more dependent on how much you've spent than any natural ability (not that I have any).
Since the Tadworth 10 I've done loads of 10K races like Dysart Dash, Elmbridge, Andy Reading 10K, Croydon, Wimbledon, Valentine 10K, Epsom NCBS etc.
Recently I've started doing the Banstead Woods 5K Time Trial (part of www.parkrun.com) and I'd highly recommend it. All of your results are stored on the web each week, you can see your best and worst times, averages, compare yourself to others and there is a points table too. All very motivating and good fun.
For 2008 I will be doing most of my racing on foot.

I've not raced on the road in ages, but have entered Wokingham 1/2 and Maidenhead 10 miles for the new year. Real target is Shinfield 10k which is flatish and seems quite quick.
Got a couple of x countries planned and some speedwork and long runs over the next few weeks.
Aiming for a 36min 10k next year, so need to put in the work now.
Enjoy the Christmas running period and see you all out on the streets/footpaths along with the New Year Resolutioners.... for a couple of weeks

Any post-Christmas racing to report?
I did the local festive run (4k - almost) and won in 11:20 in a torrential downpour. Oh, I love Christmas in Lancaster Next up is the Garstang 10k on Jan 13th.
What are y'all up to?

Hi guys...
saw a running thread here a while ago but can't find it now so put up a new post.
I go to the gym fairly regularly and always spend maybe 10 - 20 minutes on the treadmill. I can't go longer as I am too tired...
This evening I found some 5k program on the treadmill and thought I'd give it a go... So setting the speed quite low I managed 5k in 32 mins (roughtly). I know that is quite bad.
I want to get faster, and fitter, but how do I do this? I'm not really interested in running outside (at least until the summer). As well as the gym I play a bit of footy too, I've always mean a much more "explosive power" sort of person than an endurance type (used to run 100 M okay). I am fit but not for endurance (IO).
so, anything I can do or do I just keep running 5ks and up the speed every few weeks?
Thanks in advance.

I'm a footballer turned runner and am also very good at the explosive events such as 100m. The key is to slow down a little and run for longeras this helps build endurance. You can then do some speed sessions to build your pace which will enable you to add the two together and be faster for longer. Running outside is not as bad as people think and is ok at this time of year. Other than that, ask at the gym, they should be able to help yousaw a running thread here a while ago but can't find it now so put up a new post.

I have done WCTT a couple of times, and my next race is Reading half. Looking for a 10K in the mean time though to aid speed work. But I want a localish one!
Where's local for you?My internet access is limited, hence the long time for replies. Just entered the White Horse half, and Great South Run. My main aim this year is a sub 2:30 half... Yes I really am that slow !!
