Is anyone doing the Farnborough half in January?
It's the first run I've entered and other than a confirmation of payment email in the middle of October I've received nothing else.

Is this normal?
Thanks
Not entered myself but the Mrs is so I can check if she's heard any more since entering.

Are you a local then? http://www.covejoggers.co.uk/ if you're interested... biggrin

I had in mind that after Great Ethiopian I could have a bit of a rest and just enjoy parkrun and some social runs, but I've just entered Chichester 10k (a very PH race as the new route ends with a lap of Goodwood smile ) 9 weeks on Sunday, so won't have much time to back off before thinking about training for that!

I'm considering starting a new and fairly exclusive club for people who have driven and run Goodwood circuit - anyone else here eligible?!

That clashes with the Ryde 10 and (for me) its a bit dear for a 10k. Shame through as it looks a nice route.

I'm not really training for anything frown as have been struggling with an achilles injury since doing the Samphire 100 in July (well actually, I was struggling with it before then and paid the price for being too bloody minded to not run, after all what harm can come from running 100 miles?)

So just starting to try and build up the miles again really. My total number of runs is sometimes a bit misleading as it will often include a short run to/from the station as part of a commute with a longer run at the other end.

If things go OK for the rest of this year then I might try and target a new marathon PB at Manchester (April 2) and maybe a decent crack at something like The Wall (finished 7th in 2013 and I'm mentally a lot fitter now). What I should be doing is lots of speedwork but I've become very lazy the last couple of years.

Slowest on the list by a country mile biggrin

My excuse is I'm still plodding through C25K again after a non running injury felled me after just completing it last year.

Be gentle with me!

Without waffling on regarding circumstance, I've recently made a minor breakthrough that has given me heart.

I've started to run faster, with a lower average heart rate, for longer.

It's irrelevant as to what those are, they're just all a bit better now - and I'm quite pleased with myself smile

I could run faster and longer but I'd be sucking through my hoop.

I could run longer with a lower heart rate but I'd be really slow.

I could run faster with a lower heart rate but only for a short distance.

Now it's slowly making far more sense - I'm just being really careful now to very slowly increase pace and/or distance so I don't take a step backwards.

And I really thought I hated running hehe

Hence the 7:52 5K PB smile

(I still can't fathom why pausing a run doesn't do what I feel it should i.e. leave a clean break between breadcrumbs on my watch.)

Anyone doing the Mapledurham 10 mile off-road at the weekend? Think I might need to invest in some trail shoes!

Indeed - it's annoying as Garmin Connect seems to cope with it (or at least it did last time I tried). I used to be able to run to the station, stop the watch, start it again at the other end. Strava doesn't like me doing that!

I had a nice 7 mile run yesterday, averaged 8:15 minute miles. Happy to see my pace over longer distances going in the right direction.

Just getting back into running after a shoulder op and a hip injury so hopefully this should give me some motivation to get moving! Thanks.

Any general rules/etiquette on being lapped, or dealing with faster runners in waves that start after you on very narrow courses?

I did my second Bath Skyline 10k of the winter this Sunday, which is two laps off-road and also starts in waves approximately 5-10 minutes apart (I think around 150 runners per wave). I'm in Wave 1 for all 4 events over the winter, small sections of it are very narrow and technical with little option but to go single file, and other sections are fairly narrow but very technical, so once you commit to a route through it you've got to kind of stick to it (others can use other routes through it, but they may not be optimal).

I noticed a few occasions when faster runners from later waves would be less than polite about making progress through the field and were basically bumping elbows with slower runners. Most people, like myself, would move over whenever we heard a quicker runner coming through (although very few of them said they were coming through), but some sections made that impossible as you really needed to focus on yourself and your own footing, simply stepping aside was not really an option.

On the very narrow/steep section I briefly checked behind me and actually waited a few seconds for a clearly quick guy to go on through, but that seemed overly cautious compared to most.

If I'm lapping people in a race I always want them to hold their line. There's nothing worse than trying to go past and then them moving to get out of the way but ending up colliding with you!

It's a bit more tricky where there's a very narrow track and few lines. I think just carry on and keep an eye out for any passing places. I wouldn't worry too much about the bumping elbows-they're just trying to get through with as little fuss as possible as well (unless they're being dickish and properly barging through).

I know the skyline-I wouldn't want to be overtaking through there!

Had a good session today 4x1 mile off 2 mins recovery. Times were 5:52, 5:52, 6:00 and 6:06. A bit of a fade but I thought I'd be much worse! Not as fast as I would like though-but I think I'll probably do my planned 10k at the weekend-I wasn't feeling much like it but this has changed my mind.

What 10k time are you aiming for and is that part of a plan?

I did 6x800m today at just above or below 3mins. Over 1 mile I can hold 6 mins and aiming to knock some time off my (just) sub 40 10k time in January. It's a tough target though and needs all the holes in the cheese to line up on the day frown

I'm going to try and do 6 minute miling the entire way, whatever time that ends up being.

I'm not as fit as I'd like to be, but last year I wasn't really training and in March this year I ended up doing just sub 30 mins in a 5 miler (first race of the year), so if I hit my target I'll be 4 months ahead of where I was at the start of this year!

That sounds like a good session-what sort of recovery is that on?

A must under 6 min avg is very good for a 5 miler! I managed 6:06 for a 18:59 5k and was having a good stagger afterwards. That was earlier on in the year and have only hit low 19s since.

The session today was with 2 min recoveries. Have managed to get them all below 3 mins a month or so ago but I was out earlier than usual today and needed time to wake up I think smile

I started adding intervals to my training about a year ago now and 200s are down to 35s ish now, 400s 1:20-25, 800s 3 mins and miles 6 min. Parkrun times are now under 20 mins unless I am having a bad day then it's low 20s.

A recent half was a low 1h29 (3rd year at a sub 90 at the same event so it's all paying off.

The moral of the story is do intervals smile

Agree with intervals but Tempo's are massively helpful to get the speed endurance.

One long, one speed, one tempo per week.

I have Mississippi half on Sunday and given it will be flatter than anything around here in Atlanta.
