Taking up Golf

Another thought then,
If you're having a stty time, don't be too stubborn to ignore the big sticks for a few holes.
After scoring an 8 or 9 or 10, take a breath, grab a 6 iron (literally, nothing bigger than a 6 iron) and put the ball a lazy 170 (or whatever) into a safe position.
Then you've given yourself a nice 3 minute walk up the middle while some other schmuck hacks up the undergrowth. Take stock, forgive yourself for the last hole, forget about it, and gaze admiringly at the wide open green you've given yourself, and your superior mental management. Smug mode.
The green might be a bit further away than you'd like, but you're in line for an easy bogey.
And it only takes 1 single good shot out of 4 to turn an easy bogey into a sneaked par.
Do that for two or three holes then you're back in the right frame of mind.

You know, maybe we should organise a central PH Golf event some time, not a competition, but just a friendly game of golf with some mates. Anyone interested in this sort of idea??BarnatosGhost said:

Yeah that's true. Last time we played the back nine, i normally struggle, and when my tee shot went awry, i thought here we go again, but i was on the green on a par 4 in 3, but as per usual, my putting let me down a bit. However, the worst hole i had, was a 9, due to a lost ball, other than that, 6 or 7 is about my usual score. If you're having a stty time, don't be too stubborn to ignore the big sticks for a few holes.

As you rightly say, learning to foget the previous hole is a good habit to learn, as i found out, if you carry that one bad hole around with you all day, it will drag you further and further down into the doldrums. Another one of my favourite things to do, no matter whether people are coming up behind us or not, is when i get to the tee box, have a quick drink of water, and let my mind settle before i set up for the shot

If I have enough notice I can suggest to Mrs Fats that we travel up to see her family in Liverpool, and sneak the bats in the car, and slope off for a morning or afternoon. Everywhere up North is close, so I cannot see it being too far from Liverpool to Cheshire.
It's between wrexham and nantwich, so if you went under the mersey, and across via ellesmere port area, it's probably about an hours drive i guess. For me it's about 4 hrs drive, but that's no hardshipJimbo NW said:
I'm at my wits end here!!
I used to play from 13-16 and managed to get my handicap down to a modest 12. When the evils of girls and booze came about I stopped playing sold my clubs and forgot about golf apart from watching the major tournaments.
This summer I decided to take it up again and managed to bag a set of preowned taylormade burner 2.0 irons for £150 (still had my woods, wedge and putter). For the life of me I can not get better, i've played maybe once a week over summer usually at a different course every week with 2 fore 1 vouchers.
I can drive reasonably well (say 12 out of 15 fairways and usually 300 + yards) my iron shots are ok, getting on or around the green from 190 ish in. Get me to 120 and below in to the green i'm fked! I have one bad chip and then they all go to pot, thin, fat, fluffed.. You name it i'll do it.
I worked out yesterday i'm losing around 18-22 shots per round from 100 yards and in, take that away i'm back down to 15-18 handicap. I'm going back to university tomorrow and taking my clubs but the problem is there's no where to practise these shots, the only course local to my flat (Liverpool) that I can afford to join is Allerton municipal which has a tiny chipping area that you can use if you're playing...
ARGHHHHH I hate golf, I know the majority of it is in my head, I get "The fear" but it's so annoying... Any ideas??
The "I can drive reasonably well, 300+ yds" bit made me feel a bit chinny reckon.I used to play from 13-16 and managed to get my handicap down to a modest 12. That's some driving with old woods, no practice and a plus sign after the 300.

In theory, quite possible, especially if you use wilson ultra golf balls. I have a stty 1980's dunlop powermax, 3 wood/metal, and with one of them, i put it out of bounds on one hole. That was over 240 yards away, and my technique was rubbish. Don't forget, that if the Jimbo NW is athletic anyway, he has a head start, and how old are his woods?? if they are fairly recent, and he uses decent quality balls, he could conceivably hit it 300+ yards.
What are these magic balls you speak of?I used to think I hit it a long way and probably carried the ball about 240 - 250yds. Bought a laser range finder last year, amazing how many bunkers at about 220yds that I fail to carry.......Oh yeah, I play off 8 and hit it just as long as all my mates who play off 1 - 11. The occasional drive that hits a dry fairway and rolls a long way does not make you a "300yds driver of the ball".

This is true, we played a couple of holes with a guy the other week, who had the latest R11 Taylormade driver in his bag, and i think he had Burner 2.0 irons etc. Anyway, on one long par 4, he teed up his driver, and belted the ball, it cleared the drainage ditch, just, but didnt quite reach the fairway. FIL used his £5 dunlop driver and belter it a good 200 yards or so, and my crappy 1980's dunlop 3 metal/wood went slightly further, but that is down to my technique. Anyway, as carl carlson said, if you have the right gear, but not a clue, it wont make you Lee Westwood/rory mcilroy
Hope that wasn't me cheddar said:

I am amazed at how far 300 yards actually is.That's some driving with old woods, no practice and a plus sign after the 300.
Most golf professionals do not AVERAGE over 300 yards in a season and I am not talking about club pro's, these are the big guns.
I now have a GPS and it is amazing when you crack one down the fairway to find it has 'only' gone 230yards yet I have out driven better players.
To say you drive 300+ on average I would call BS.
Sorry!
You must be an angler!

Hitting 300 and averaging 300+ are two very different things!Everyone has got that one drive that they speak about for months where they could have got over 300 yards but to hit it more often than not, no way!
Look here;
Average Distances
This is the PGA average driving distance for TOURING PRO'S. There are only 24 that are averaging over 300 for the year.
