They'd also need to learn how to tackle - just charging into someone isn't allowed in Rugby. The penalty count could be quite high.

Not forgetting that they'd be somewhat confused when play doesn't stop every 20 seconds for a "Message from our sponsors"

To those of you who wish to deride NFL players I would ask you this. How many British players have made it in the NFL? The answer is hardly any (ever). One or two kickers and a couple of v minor backup onfield players. By contrast there are a lot of Americans in the football Premiership and Champioship here. (My own club Reading has 2). Given that the average pay is huge in the NFL (particularly compared to Rugby) I would imagine that British rugby players would be flocking over there if they had the requisite skills.

And play does not stop for ad breaks. They put ad breaks in when the play stops, which given that both teams change all their personnel when possession and the clock stops wheneveer a pass is incomplete changes is quite often.

That is a good point. Rugby takes tough guys, but they would go down after about two hits with these monsters; they are simply the 1% who rises to the top to play in the NFL....no comparison.

Definitely not deriding NFL players. Rugby players would get destroyed in the NFL. NFL players would get destroyed in Rugby. They are different sports and require different training and skills.

I've applied for 5. My dad's a Dolphins fan, so I'll have to support them too, seeing as the Chargers aren't playing.

If we actually get the tickets it'll be awesome. I'll take any excuse to go to Wembley or watch NFL...or both.

yes

Most boring load of tosh ever.

As for the comment made by someone re: rugby players that is like comparing chalk and cheese.

Yank football involves loads of idle time, low tempo followed by a sudden and brief play then it goes all quiet again. Without wanting to start a flame war all American sports suck.

what makes me laugh is when they hold their 'World Series' scratchchin

Thats your opinion. The 850 million people that watched superbowl on TV would disagree with you.

I'm English and I love football, rugby, cricket passionately. I also love NFL. They are not mutually exclusive.

Just because you can't hang doesn't mean you need to bring out the sour grapes. A Brit telling someone their sports suck hehe Edit to say: I posted that not as a snipe at my Brit friends, just to wind up Disco!

That fig of 850 mil is nothing but guesswork/hype by optimistic broadcaster PRIOR to the game. I think the broadcasters bounded around a similar figure last year, the actual figures were closer to 150 mil.

It is watched less than the FA Cup, weekly premiership and almost every other WORLDWIDE sport

Not sure of frequency, but they most certainly are tested.

I suspect he was referring to performance enhancing drugs. In my sport, someone will be tested after every international match and there is random out of competition testing for anyone on the governing body's performance lists.

In season, the testing policy is random in frequency. Basically a computer program selects six players from each active-roster to be tested every week of the season. There is no maximum or minimum testing, although the highest I've heard of is someone on the Chargers who was tested 20 times in two seasons. Also, the league rules allow the club owners to do their own testing too. I know that the owner of the Cowboys does this on any player who fails a league test. Out of season the players are notified in advance, but the number and fequency of the tests is vague.

The league's punishments for failing are also very clear-cut (a contrast to the handling of certain cases by the FA for example). For performance-enhancing drugs: First fail = 4 game ban (25% of season), second fail = 6 game ban (33% of season), third fail = full season ban, more than that and the suspension is unlimited (you need to satify the league and team doctors that you are drug-free before you can play). For recreational drugs, the first fail is enrolement in a rehab program, the second fail is 4 game ban etc etc. The terms of these bans also allows the clubs to not pay the players during their ban although I'm not certain whether this does happen.

For example, Miami's runningback Ricky Williams has an addiction problem with marijuana. After his fourth test-fail he was banned for a year, but this has just been extended for another six months because he's not doing well in rehab. They are trying to get $8 million back from him for the year out of the game!

Does that include steroids, because as I understand it from friends in the US they are very widely used in the NFL?

The NFL program is heavily biased towards catching steroid abuse (ie performance enhancing drugs). However they are having the same issues catching some of the more exotic options as other sports. There are always loop-holes and flaws to a testing scheme (out of season testing seems to be a big issue for all sports), but the NFL have taken a strong stance over the issue of drugs, and consequently have not suffered the same problems as say Major-League Baseball.
