To bat probably WAS the right decision as we don't want to be batting last ideally but I don't think it was as cut and dried as everyone on here thought. Sure, on a really hot summer's day with no cloud you'd stick the Aussies in the field for five sessions. Cloud cover in England and bowlers who know what they're doing and the ball is going to swing when it is new and before it gets roughed up too much.
Thing is, the scores would roughly be about the same if the roles had been reversed ... they'd have got what we did and we'd be where they are.
If it's hot and sunny tomorrow and the ball doesn't swing they should make a few. Thing is, they ain't got a lot of batting left. Give Hughes some chin music, then stick three gulleys in and pitch it up and he'll will get out soon enough.
I think the Aussies bowled well and to the conditions. A few rash shots by our guys (Pryor and Trott) but there was some decent movement about.
The ball that got Clarke out was the seam bowlers version of Warne's from years ago - I thought he'd nicked it when I first saw it - only on the relay did I see he'd missed it and it had hit the very top of off stump - pitched off more or less and hit it, beautiful ... that would have got Tendular, Richards, any of the greats out.

To the "Put 'em in" crowd, all one can say is Nasser...Gabba...2002.
Any Aussies may wish to contemplate Punter...Edgbaston...2005.
Never again!
You say that but those were two distinctly different decsions, taken for vastly different reasons.Any Aussies may wish to contemplate Punter...Edgbaston...2005.

I think England were so shell-shocked on that tour that Hussain couldn't contemplate exposing England's batting to the might of the Aussies so opted to field.
Punter had lost McGrath in the preceding hour at Edgbaston so not quite sure why he opted to bowl - I think he really thought the Aussie attack COULD bowl out England on any wicket without their spearhead. Apparently Warne had a few choice words for him when he came back in. I think we made 409 in the day! but that was a very hot day - not the same as it was today ...
Still playing one day stuff. Batters get your Test Match heads on. Need Broad today to keep the pressure on. Wouldn't fancy going at them today with only 2 seamers. Not Swanny's wicket yet. Wait till day 5, that's if we get there.........
It's the Ashes and the first day of the series. The crims won't give this to us they will fight and I want them to. Siddle well bowled England will not bat as badly as that second up. Let's get Broady back and send 3 or 4 back before lunch. Bring it on.

Well if somebody had said to me shortly after the tea interval yesterday that this is where we'd be at stumps day one then reckon I'd have thought that eight score draws had come up on Littlewoods.
Today will be interesting. Still worried about Broady not just for this test but the series.
Well bowled Siddle with the 5 fer. Cracker that got Root but really it is what is expected from fast convicts.
Jimmy and Finny you know what to do.

The pitch was wierdly a bit slow yesterday, hopefully as it dries it might speed up and bounce more. Finn and Broad can then commence the chin bombardment at their lower order.
However I suspect Swann is good enough even on a day two pitch to get a couple out.
I don't think there is any damp in the pitch! It's as dry as they come I reckon. However I suspect Swann is good enough even on a day two pitch to get a couple out.
Smith gone - can't contain himself outside off stump
