A fishing rod question
Discussion
Very interesting. I never knew that. This thread has been like a mini fishing school.
Is the upshot of that, that there is no point using lines stronger than 20lbs?
On to my next question.
Having decided to go a bit lighter I bought myself three Century carp rods with 3.5lbs test curve.
I understand what test-curve relates to but what kind of pressure will cause them to snap?

Mono would be my choice - the amount of stretch gives a good safety net, its cheap to replace and it doesn't tangle anywhere near as much as braid.
Some good strong mono with a good length of Kryston Quicksilver as a snag leader would be my go to choice.
Ive never used anything but mono before, but in this instance I need too much strong line so would need an absolutely massive reel for mono. Some good strong mono with a good length of Kryston Quicksilver as a snag leader would be my go to choice.
It is quite embarrassing how, aged 40, I still bow to peer pressure.
THis thread has forever ruined my ability to fish at a modest cost. This is how it happened (Ive plumped for heavy carp gear rather than uptide rods):
THe rods are things of great beauty and I know I cannot possibly ever sell them and I think the reels will be the same. THis will be an expensive thread for me I think.

. Given that I want 3 of everything and it may be the only time I use this set up, then I'm on a budget.

Just have a little look at this nicer stuff

SLowpoke/Legless.
Looked into those Avet reels and I am absolutely not going to spend £600 on 3 reels.
I realise it makes sense to buy good and sell it, but I know myself too well and in 40 years I have never sold anything I have bought with this in mind and I know I wont do it this time. My shed and loft just fill up with single use expensive items and this trip is already expensive.

Have a look how shiny and nice the better stuff is. Are you really that poor and disgusting?

I'm honestly not sure I agree with you there (although admittedly I have zero experience of multipliers beyond big game ones on charter boats)
from the course fishing I have done I have always said that expensive fishing tackle is the worst thing in the world for diminishing returns. I have dozens of rods and reels of all prices and I cannot imagine a situation where a cheap rod and reel would lose me a fish.

You must be gay or something. Frightened of decent stuff. You tiny, scared little girl
SO in order to remain cool I have bought 3 Century 3.5lbs carp rods (fatboy slim) and in the post are 3 Daiwa Tournament Entohs which I am very excited about.THe rods are things of great beauty and I know I cannot possibly ever sell them and I think the reels will be the same. I already did and came close. Beautiful things. Fortunately the line capacity was marginal so it saved me having to wring my hands.]
On the rest of your comment about the wife, I heard a nice phrase from a cyclist the other day which is applicable:
'My biggest fear is dying and my wife selling my gear for what I told her I had paid for it'

Line capacity won't be marginal if you are on braid - anyway, you aren't really going to need massive line capacity for this expedition are you? Your not going to be fishing at huge depths or casting massive distances?
I just keep reading of big ones doing 300m+ runs which sounds extraordinary, but better safe than sorry.Next question: Does braid degrade over time? Even if you load it but don't use it?
i.e am I better off waiting until nearer the time to load the reels?
Bump!
I have a question about drags/baitrunner.
Assuming a fish is going to take a bait savagely, and assuming in either scenario below that fishing rods will be secure, which of the following is best for hook-ups:
1) To have the reel set on baitrunner, allow a fish to run for a while, and then strike.
2)Have the drag set tight and let the fish hook itself with the resistance of the rod (and probably strike for good measure)
CHeers

A quick last minute bump.
I am going soon and having anxiety that I am forgetting fishing fundamentals.
This happened when I suddenly realised I hadn't even packed a disgorger of any type and made me realise I could be forgetting something really basic that could cause me a st load of trouble.
ANyway can you lot think me up a fishing checklist
I have
Rods, reels, alarms, lures, traces, swivels, floats, leads and a boga grip. Just off the top of my head.
Please just list other essentials at me
