Im only a newcomer to this thread But I can actually remember when british boxers were to the fore.

benn eubanks, and even further back Jim Watt and the best of all Ken Buchannan

Has anyone watched that fight when he totally outboxed Duran and still lost.
Thomas Hearns the greatest ever middleweight?
Larry Holmes Argue the point.

Welcome wavey

Not quite sure what you mean by you 'actually remember when British boxers were to the fore'...as if that were some long-passed era. I'd say British boxing is as strong now as at any stage, with exciting, world level performers in most weight divisions. Possibly the only thing we're missing is a real pound-for-pound contender since Carl Froch retired, but there are a good few fighters who could be knocking on that door over the next year or two...

Welcome to the boxing thread!...

I spoke to buchanan and duran a few years ago and of course the subject came up. Duran didn't elaborate much but ken certainly did. He felt that duran WAS winning the fight but the low blow in the 13th was very cynical. And the referee was a disgrace for awarding duran the title on a foul.
I've got to be honest I never felt watching the fight that ken was in the driving seat.

On to tommy hearns.....middleweight was too big for him. He was a better light middle and even better welterweight so I can't make an argument for him being the best middleweight.
Hagler was a far superior middleweight in my eyes.
Best middleweight ever?? On achievements alone and number of hall of fame fighters faced the record of Harry greb must put him right at the top of the tree.

Larry Holmes had a great jab but you can't make a case that he's any higher in the heavyweight all time great list than the bottom end of the top ten.

Ali,louis, johnson,Lewis, klitschko, marciano,Holyfield, foreman and frazier all rank higher for me.
Holmes is criminally underestimated by a lot if people but I don't think you could seriously make a case for him being rated any higher than 8th or 9th all time

So.....i fking love Dodd (Sean, not ken Yiliterate!!!!)....The stoppage was heartbreaking. Props to cardle in the post fight interview. The rematch will be a great fight in its own right.

Callum Smith hey!! Levels. He looked 2 or 3 higher in there. This kid will be a world champ no doubt. I'd back him against badou jack right now

I felt really gutted for Dodd last night, I understand that refereeing is a hard task but you can give the lad an eight count and then call it off if he isn't right, the two that put him down in the end were forearm smashes not punches, just gutted for the lad.

Callum smith looked awesome but I think he's way to big to continue at super middle in the long term, what is he 23? A baby in boxing terms. can see him taking belts at light heavy too, there was a bit of spite in his punches last night as well, good to see, well not for rocky fielding obviously :-/

Super-middle is the best and most competitive division in my eyes, even now Kessler and Froch have retired. I think unifying the division will come before he moves up (unless he fails in title bids). Calzaghe spent most of his career at super-middle, so for Smith being so young he can wait 6-7 years yet.

Some KOs/punches in slow motion. Fascinating how the face looks savaged, and the amount of power a punch packs.

Broner & Ward have a dangerous habit (for them) of opening their mouths when delivering a punch, one day someone will connect & serve up a broken jaw, trainers should really sort this out.

look at this iconic shot from marciano/lastarza in '53.......

rocky had a habit of sticking his tongue out when really digging in.......that might have ended badly had anyone caught him on the counter!

No doubt, but the lad is 6ft 3 and not exactly a drain pipe build, I can't see him enjoying the weight cuts or constantly living in the gym as he edges towards his 30s.

As an aside Radio 5 quoted Froch this morning "I'm back in the gym and have my eyes and ears open to any possibilities with regards coming out of retirement" or words to that effect!!!

i can smell a vitali-esque coming out of retirement and straight in at the deep end. he won't want to build back up....his ego won't allow it. but a straight shot at james degale's belt?? it would certainly sell big numbers. much bigger than degale has any hope of generating on his own!

Or Ward, or perhaps even Golovkin - Froch never managed his career particularly strategically I didn't expect he'd plan his retirement that well either, I'd rather he went out with a bang loosing to one of those two rather than beating Martin Murray or Degale, stalling their careers and then retiring again.

Can't imagine him bothering for DeGale. GGG would be insanity... wouldn't it? Mind you, they'd have to build a new stadium to accomodate all the fans who want to watch it.

ggg won't happen unless he goes up. carl will not come down.

who else is there? degale/ badou jack??

i'm pretty sure he'd only get out of bed for a big fight, which pretty much makes it a challenge to a current belt holder
