My work, which is shooting mad at a senior level, has decided that now that game season is over, this year one of our our standard corporate hospitality regular fixtures will be clay shooting, with provision/instruction for beginners so we can help others get into the sport if they want to.

As you can imagine, I'm pretty happy about this! Shooting is getting pricey, and I have no shame - I will accept any and all free sessions.

I also like the attempt at inclusivity. A lot of juniors of all genders are jumping at the chance to learn, and will get to do so, which is very cool.

Some of the justification has been that golf (also a common hobby/entertainment in financial services) is not that inclusive, hard and time-consuming to learn to a point of having fun, and less useful for getting groups of us and groups of clients together for quality time en-masse. I tend to agree.

Starting to get prices through for new season , and one of my synidcates have dropped their prices down from £66 a bird to £50 a bird, so i would expect prices to be cheaper for 2024

Interesting.

I did the maths on one of our game shoots, and showed that we could do multiples of clay shooting with multiples of people for far less than one big Devon shoot, and get more people at younger levels involved.

This worked. We seniors will still shoot game with senior clients next winter, so at this stage it's looking like a win for my personal shoot calendar...

Buggers don't like skiing though. My attempts to get them to fund that hobby of mine has so far failed. First world problems, I agree...

Is your work hiring?

Seriously though I think from what I’ve seen this year pricing has made a lot of folk cutback this year, so definitely need to encourage more folk in to the sport.
(I’m possibly reaping the benefits though with 3 days still on calendar to go to mop up plenty residual birds!!)

(I pay my days as an individual & it’s getting damn pricey but know quite a few who shoot with me expense through their Co’s, had the discussion that if they can get their VAT back then offset against tax their days are half the cost of mine!)

On the clays, a simulated day is a fantastic clay day experience. Would make a great idea for a corporate day. Quite a few I shoot with are planning more of this for summertime

I know several people who still expense shooting , but they often bring clients shooting so it works, I can't do that either frown

Sadly, my skiing days are long over which still hacks me off from time to time, but I still feel your pain biglaugh

Still one from two hobbies isn't a bad return. How do they feel about hideously un-ecofriendly old Detroit muscle cars? rofl

Is that a VAT inclusive price?
& is that shooting same locations (i’m in a roving syndicate so look for different opportunities & return to places we like but did actually say no to a fantastic place (fantastic shooting last couple of years but @ £70+Vat this season we bowed out & went somewhere else)

I know for me & a few others when the price of a day crossed £1k it became harder to fill spare pegs. I’ve got one shoot that’s a bit dead man’s shoes to get in & is £40+VAT for a 150 day (mixed bird) & there’s never a shortage of takers for that day so I just nod my head & say yes when the keeper gets in touch!

Well I'm driving the Camaro to France with two colleagues and some clients this summer: convoy is my 69 Camaro, a colleague's 65 Vette, and a client's 69 DB6, so I've got that hobby through as well! And well be doing Goodwood Revival, as we do every year.

I look forward to expensing the fuel bill...

Yes vat inclusive, and its one syndicate over 2 shoots, they have given up one of those this year and taken on another as its gone bankrupt.
