Roasting hot lunchtime run - 11k in an hour. Pleased with that because not only is it the second longest distance I have ever run but also because I have now run further in the last 7 days than I have in any week before. Only 28.5k so nothing compared to some of you guys but I am building up the distance which is the plan.

St Albans half, 1.50 for me. Walked about 10 minutes of that, I know I have a sub 1.40 but need the right course and day. Felt hilly, 3,500 runners. Slow start due to numbers. Considered giving up running altogether about mile 4, very tough.
I did the St.Albans Half, 1h 41m. It’s a hilly course and the weather was scorching (always the same in early June, - I sweated buckets. Just glad I wasn't out for longer!

I saw this and thought if this thread.

It's a video of Galen Rupp's strength training routine.

Nice 5k today and got a PB.

Quite nice and I paced myself well, managed a sprint finish to the end. Pretty sure I should have tried harder in the last 1km or so. Maybe next week!

Hey all,

I Just signed up to Rat Races Man Vs Mountain and need to get some hill (mountain) training in before September. I live in Essex and I am looking for some races around the south east in the next couple of months that have plenty of nasty hills in them. anything between half marathon and marathon distance would be brilliant. Anyone know of any races or any good places to go out and train at the weekend?

Thanks,

If I wasnt doing the Brutal Enduro on Saturday this would have been perfect, will check out the area anyway and use it for training at some point. Thanks.

amateur question here... how uncomfortable should running be? I ask, because with say cycling I can hop on a bike, go at a decent effort for 4+ hours and still feel human. Running though, after the first hour or so my whole body seems to stiffen up with reduced range of motion in the hips and tensing up in the lower back. I have run a few times a week for the past 3 or 4 years so surely my body should have adapted to it by now.

Good track session last night - 16x400m with 100 jog recovery. I averaged 74s per rep with a range of 72s-76s and the recoveries averaged 36s each. We had a big group and decent weather although a bit of a breeze on the back straight to work into on each lap. Felt pretty good after a 57 mile week last week. Long run and gym later today.

Had my second run out with the running club last night - 15 hilly and mainly offroad kilometres. Further than I have run before so was really pleased to be able to do a couple of (for me) fastish km at the end. Vindicates my decision to run with the club becuase for the previous 13km we kept it really steady and slower than I would normally run at which is what I wanted.

Am now feeling confident that I can complete the half in Peterborough in October so can spend the next 4 months working on improving my fitness so that I can get a good time in.

Are you stretching and foam rolling at all afterwards? Could simply be you're pushing yourself too hard, even if you don't think you are?

Stretching yep. not had to use rollers since getting over a bad case of shin splints that near cripplied me when I did start out with too much too soon, but that was nearly 4 years ago.

I'm definately not going too hard - it'll occur even if im doing say 11 min miles or something similarly slow, get to about mile 8 and the joints just dont want to play anymore.

What's your footstrike like? Mid-foot or heel-strike? Mid-foot strike has advantages - better shock absorption through the foot and calf muscles, better stride as a heel-strike tends to suggest over-striding which slows you down.

Ball of the foot landing directly below your centre of gravity is ideal.

Hill reps for me at lunchtime ~250m steep grass slope in approx 80s, jog back recovery. Only 6 times today but will be working up to more over the next few weeks. Very hard work in the lunchtime heat!
