Carrick IMO is a poor mans Lampard/Gerrard. Fergie wishing to buy him says nothing with his recent record of midfielder signings

Probably going for carrick as he's no chance of getting Gerrard or Lampard.

I know nowt about football, but ... it seemed that in the second half we were playing 2 men short. They had twelve players, and we had only ten as Crouch was a spare part (no disrespect to him, he played a blinder expecially as the ref seemed to have a grudge against him personally). To change to a defensive formation 4-5-1 by pulling off Owen when we were only 1 ahead was plain silly. A decision highlighted by Beckham playing the ball across to no-one, when everyone could see in their minds eye Owen steaming in and poking that cross into the net.

It seemed from Sven's comments that he felt it best to play defensively to protect the three points. We were playing decent attacking football and had the game by the scruff of the neck until then. Try that against Germany, France, Brazil, even Sweden, and they will tear us apart - as it was we were lucky to hang on.

Had our lads already run their legs off and ran out of steam, hence the tactical withdrawal? Was Owen just struggling with his fitness? Or did this match reveal a serious squad weakness to the rest of the world - take a striker out and the English bulldog is toothless?
