SPOTY Who will it be

The programme is nowadays far from being the ‘must-watch’ that it was for decades.
Yeah it used to be a really big deal and something I look forward to. Now it's just meh. If Broady wasn't nominated I wouldn't even watch.I think it needs some new presenters. Logan, Linker and Balding have done great and are very good at what they do, but Linker has become a pastiche of himself and it all feels a little tired.

It’s declined at the same rate as the BBC Sports coverage
Agreed, but I think the footy lady will win. It’s declined at the same rate as the BBC Sports coverage
Would like to see KJT win though.

People who slag of SPOTY and loudly proclaim they won't watch it are like the self appointed cool kids. They would tell everyone the school disco was lame and there were not going..
They'd stay at home, with their mums while we drank Kestrel, danced to Wham's Last Christmas and had a good fumble round the bike sheds.
Not sure what the kids did but we teachers had a great night.

Used to be second Sunday before Christmas… I see it’s now shoved into Tuesday evening. As for the contenders - it’s a non Olympic year, so rather slim pickings. I suspect ladies football will be mobilised and the goalie will win - despite not winning anything but the golden gloves.
Stuart Broad seems to be popular on here - not sure what he's won this year? And he plays in a sport where there are only about 3 countries that are any good. Randy Winkman said:

I would class Mollie King as a win, although that wasn't this year I would like to see KJT get it but I suspect it will be the England goalkeeper who gets it, after all the publicity about not being able to buy her jersey.

A sign of how the BBC view sport nowadays. In its heyday, it was Sports Review of the Year - were SPotY would be selected.......
I'm not getting the Broad nomination - unless it's for NOT winning the Ashes......Which is so typically British...celebrate not winning.

I think it’s a bit of a lifetime thing with Broad. He did become only the second pace bowler to achieve 600 Test Match dismissals during the Ashes (he was England’s leading wicket-taker too) and quite remarkably took a wicket with his last delivery and scored a 6 from the final ball he faced. The award has never been purely about winning stuff - there has always been a more difficult to define element of capturing the public’s interest. Mansell in 1986, Gazza in 1990 and Damon Hill in 1994 spring to mind as SPotY winners that didn’t win in their respective sporting targets in those years.5pen said:

Yeah plus he was a big part of the team coming back from 2 down to levelling the series and in fact we probably would have won it if it wasn't for the great British weather.ajprice said:
If the SPOTY voting goes the same way as replica shirt sales, Earps will walk it
It will be interesting to see what happens. What has annoyed me in the past is its a popularity contest and the big sports often get the glory because of the supporters.I think its correct to say Football is the most watch sport in this country, followed by cricket. But womens football? How popular is that and will the male football fans vote for the footballer anyway.
