I am aware that most PH members will not be interested in this event but it could be a rather interesting spectacle at the new Wembly.

I am a lifelong US football fan. University level mostly (I played). NFL fan as well. However, I believe this will never work. Even if Euro-types like the sport, I doubt that anybody can field a team to compete with current NFL ones....unless they form the league out of Europeans alone. If they are meant to compete with US NFL teams, then it will take some years to become competative, like it took us to stay on the soccer field with you guys. Before anybody says the words "Rugby players"....sorry, they wouldn't last a minute.

Well after having a chat with a good friend and colleague who is in New Jersey (massive Giants fan) he said that the game on the 28th is actually a league game and counts towards the standard season.

His was under the impression that this is a show game that counts and there will be both a full Giants and full Dolphins squad.

Quote from the website:

“The Miami Dolphins will host the New York Giants at London's Wembley Stadium in the first NFL regular-season game to be played outside of North America, National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell announced today”

Not sure what you mean, as essentially what they are doing is playing one of the regular week 8 NFL games at Wembley* next season.

* Subject of course to Wembley being finished

That's different. Usually, they would do an "exibition game" in Japan every year but it didn't count. So, they are simply going to play a regular season game in the UK? I guess what I am wondering is are they just looking to expand the audience or expand teams into Europe?

At first I'd be inclined to say you're right. However, given the unique size, strength, speed combination of the NFL players....that would be interesting!

This is a regular season game and is in fact a Miami home game. So Dolphins fans will only get 7 rather than 8 home field games next season which is quite a sacrifice.

The aim is to increase the exposure of the NFL in europe. Apparently they had 5000,000 ticket requests within hours of the announcement.

Perhaps, but they'd be required to take off their padding and helmets to play rugby, it'd only be fair!

Is that 500,000 or 5,000,000? Either way, I am surprised.

True. But remember, that gear is not so much for protection as it is a weapon.

They'd also need to learn how to tackle - just charging into someone isn't allowed in Rugby. The penalty count could be quite high.

I dunno. Eli Manning is one of the real hot up and coming qb's. Who knows? The Bears were derided all season but reached the Superbowl.

Not forgetting that they'd be somewhat confused when play doesn't stop every 20 seconds for a "Message from our sponsors"

To those of you who wish to deride NFL players I would ask you this. How many British players have made it in the NFL? The answer is hardly any (ever). One or two kickers and a couple of v minor backup onfield players. By contrast there are a lot of Americans in the football Premiership and Champioship here. (My own club Reading has 2). Given that the average pay is huge in the NFL (particularly compared to Rugby) I would imagine that British rugby players would be flocking over there if they had the requisite skills.

And play does not stop for ad breaks. They put ad breaks in when the play stops, which given that both teams change all their personnel when possession and the clock stops wheneveer a pass is incomplete changes is quite often.
