Was Alan Hansen any good?

A little before my time but the way he talks I imagine he was a class defender.
A little bit of me, though, hopes that he was an absolute pile of shite who talks a good game.
Anyone remember?

He was one of the best in Europe at the time, and the best in British footy. He read the game brilliantly and played a la Beckenbauer. Didn't get too many Scottish caps cos they preferred 2 numpties from Aberdeen. being an LFC fan spose bit biased!!

Alex McLeish and Willie Miller were more than just "2 numpties", they were the central defensive partnership that helped Aberdeen (under Fergie) to 2 league titles, 4 SFA cups and the european cup-winner's cup. Of course it helped that Fergie was not just the Aberdeen manager, but also the assistant Scotland boss!!

From what i can remember he was part of the then called' Red Machine' that was a joy to watch for us nuetrals,a great defender.
