Throttle Jack Solenoid
Discussion
My 87 Turbo HC is fitted as standard with a throttle jack, which prevents the tickover dropping back to 950rpm between shifts or when the choke or air conditioning is being used.
If you blip the throttle in neutral it presently results in a false tickover of about 1100rpm being maintained.
This irritates me and doubtless puts unnecessary strain on the synchros when engaging a gear from rest, making an already obstructive gearbox even harder to use.
Is there any sensible reason why I can't set the throttle jack adjuster so that it has no effect on rpm?
Cheers

Pat,
The whole reason for the throttle jack is to maintain an optimal idle when the car is either cold, or when a power accessory such as the AC is running. This ensures that the crank speed dependent water pump and oil pump are providing sufficient flow to cool/lubricate the engine.
That having been said, you could loosen the bracket it attaches to and move the unit away from the throttle spindle a bit which would effectively lower the RPM's it produces. Personally, I'd learn to live with it in order to better maintain the engine under the conditions mentioned above. Happy Motoring! Jim'85TE

Cheers, Jim.
I don't use the choke or the air con, so the only thing that the throttle jack does is prevent rpm drop when shifting.
I think that I'll adjust the rpm lift to zero and see how I get on.
The false 1200rpm tickover caused by blipping the throttle in neutral, or caused if you drop the car out of gear when coasting to lights is infuriating.
It also can do the synchros no good at all, as engaging gears is harder.
Does anyone else have this problem, or is it limited to the relatively few carburettor HC Turbos?
Or maybe it is just me.....
Cheers
