Britewell Hill is not particularly long but hits 20%, enough for even a lightweight like me to make good progress!
For descents like that I find it's more about confidence that gravity. I'm carrying a good 15kg more than you but you're a much better descender.
Agreed!

Since I hit a pothole downhill at 30+ and bust both tyres and bent both rims I've been really put off descending, especially if it's tree lined and lots of shadows.

Looking at this heatmap of activity it seems strange that the French don't appear to have embraced Strava like the rest of the "cycling nations"

http://labs.strava.com/heatmap/#5/9.61758/49.16108...

The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy all show activity along with of course the UK and USA. What not France? confused

p.s. this is rather funky too. live activity upload display

They have only recently added French language to Strava. Do not underestimate how limiting an English-language internet is to the French!

I've been riding with a French bike club for just under a year, I'm the only one using Strava. At the biggest road races (90+ in my cat), at best 3 others might upload their data.

A lot of people seem to use openrunner for planning routes, that has a strong French following.

Thanks, Scott!

Why isn't it accessible directly from the Strava 'dashboard'? It would make sense, surely?
Cool, I didn't know this existed.
How cool is that??? I've only been home and there are already 50 other people up there from my commute! hehe

Not Strava per se but a GPS question.

On this evening's ride my 705 was going mad constantly auto pausing and resuming again a minute or so later. Very frustrating.

I asked if anyone had seen similar on the local club's Facebook page and someone mentioned a solar flare. Does that sound plausible?

Anyone else experiencing similar recently?

Have you got a cadence/speed sensor?

I had the same, read online it was the sensor had water in.. Took it apart and left it on the window sill for a day in the sun, fine ever since.. Didn't find any water, but seems to have fixed it.

Hmm, I washed the bike today, so certainly sounds plausible.

I had done exactly the same.

Now I take the sensor off if I'm doing a proper clean.. Have put a little bit of electrical tape where the sensor sits so I can easily place it back in the right place.

Simple fix - turn off auto pause, you're only kidding yourself smile

slightly more helpful answer - it's more likely to be bad position fixing; too few satellites, poor view of the sky, e.g. in a gorge, sometimes lots of trees.. if you have a wheel speed sensor it should revert to that when the gps speed is shonky, but if you don't, it will autopause when the speed registers as stopped.

Another tip: If you do have a wheel speed/cadence sensor turn off auto-wheel size detection.

While we're here, should the magnet be further out on the wheel or doesn't it matter where it is?

You're kinda limited anyway, but no, it doesn't matter once it knows the circumference of the wheel.

Here's another question, which might fit better in the gadgets section, but I'll ask here anyway.

I run an Edge 705, so have to plug into the laptop to download my rides, that's fine. However what about the times I don't have the laptop on (work laptop so generally only on during work hours)

I have a Samsung tablet which is what I do most of my PH browsing and Facebook etc in the evening. I have the Stava App downloaded so that I can view mine and others rides, comment, give kudos etc.

Is there a way to download directly from my 705 to the tablet?

99% certain no, sorry.
