I've done 1000m in 1:29.xx 500m in 28.xx....the same gearing as Chris Hoy but on a turbo trainer with no wind resistance :P

To improve your top speed being more explosive is the key as well as good pedaling technique. Being able to jump high will help you pedal a higher speed. So I'd hammer deadlifts and squats for you.

Pah! 49.96 kilo for me biggrin

In which case you're not going to be spinning out a 50/11.

Either way it makes no sense.

Out of interest what do most of you aim for on the flat? In perfect conditions, as I know that wind ruins everything.

I'm not the strongest cyclist, and my bike isn't the lightest. I usually try and aim for 20-22mph as I find I can achieve it without exerting too much energy so I can recover for the next climb.

If conditions are perfect, and there might even be a slight tail win then I tend to sit at about 22-24 mph.

Good god you lot are fit! If I hit an average of 14mph+ I'm utterly thrilled! Myself and other members of "team midlife crisis" once managed an average of 17mph on a jaunt back from Scotland over about 15miles. I was star fished on a table in the beer garden of the pub when we got back, someone else ended up collapsed in a hedge..

We're doing it all wrong I think...

Average over an entire ride and average on the flat can be very different figures once you throw in a few climbs, traffic lights etc.

Through West London and a bit of richmond park over 700 miles in rush hour I've averaged 16.5 mph.

That figure easily translates to another 2/3 if you go on a quiet day.

Over an hour of mixed terrain I'll average 34Km/h, but that is working hard!

I averaged just short of 17mph over 8 miles last night, gradually climbing 250ft. I was carrying quite a bit of kit though.

That old chesnut hehe

for anyones that is interested, I was able to get to 34 mph on the way into work today on the flat road that cuts down the middle of R park, so he MAY be telling the truth biggrin

Sounds like you need to check your computer especially with all that bulk and wind resistance
biggrin

I'm sure there's a cycling version of the phrase 'there's no replacement for displacement'.

Its all about the wattage I guess wink

Back on topic, I think it is viable the guy has not said he was doing 20 miles at 36 mph he said he maxed out, for all we know he could have reached his maximum cadence, I know on my MTB once I hit 30 mph I start bouncing on the saddle as I struggle to control the cadence / rotational mass that is my legs.

I don't see why 35mph on the flat isn't easily achievable.

I have a 53/11 on my Tarmac Comp and spinning at 120rpm (downhill) I have broken 45mph.
I can manage 100rpm on the flat for (very) short periods of time - that's ~37mph and I wouldn't exactly call myself fit.

There's one big difference though. You're not claiming that you're spinning out on the flat with 53/11 gearing!
