MTB Top Tyres - Wadda You Guys Rate ???
Discussion
My new bike came with Specialized 'The Captain' something-or-other that have been disappointing in muddy conditions. On my old rigid I had ended up with Panaracer Trailrakers that were far better for typical English forest/bridleway conditions, so another vote for them comes from me. When I get round to it I'll swap the Panaracers onto the new bike cos I'm riding that exclusively now.
I've been using Panaracer Fire XC Pro Comps for a while now. Really nice in most conditions.

Simply cannot believe people are recommending Conti Vertical Pros for wet weather! I had all my best 'offs' with them. The bike would just wash out from under me with no warning whatsoever.
Anyone wants two lightly used 2.1 Verti-pros need only send me a stamped addressed box and they can have those fecking dangerous things for free. I'll chuck in a couple of lightly use Hutchison Pythons too.
High Rollers, draggy-ish but confidence inspiring!

Sure you'll have new tyres on it by now but anyway...
I've got the same bike. Stuck a 2.1 Kenda Nevegal (the StickE one as I got it seriously cheap) on the front and left the Speed King on the back. I really like that combo at the moment
The SK is one of the worst front tyres I've ever used, hated the bike on the first ride with one on both ends. That said I think it works well as a back tyre if you don't mind it sliding a bit.
The Nevegal was a serious surprise, it was on offer so I thought it would do as a back tyre, I'd definitely have another up front when this is worn.
Think the SK on the back of the Boardie and my HT will have to be replaced over the winter, probably the front tyres moving to the back and a fatter high roller on the front.

Posted earlier on this - I have Panaracer 2.1 XC pro's on the Orange... so important to get the right pressure in yer rubber. I have been out and ridden like a prat on the trails... stopped, looked at the conditions, changed the pressure a little, and hey presto, I am a cycling god again (poetic license).
I like a combination of Kenda Blue Groove on the front and Kenda Excavator on the rear. I'm running 2.5 Kenda Nevegal StickE on my Mythic but they are really draggy and I will be switching over to the former at the weekend.
I also use tubeless as I suffered punctures every time I took the bikes out. Even my vintage mountain bikes have gone tubeless this year. Its messy and a faff making the change but worth it.

For general all round UK trail riding on a full suss bike i've tried lots and lots of options, kenda nevegals, conti verticals, IRCs, Specialised, various Schwalbe combo's, Minion/High roller high roller/highroller etc etc
and about 18 months ago i settled on ardent 2.25 front and rear. For something that hits the sweet spot between roll to grip to knowing when they are about to slip its the best that i've found so far.
cannot recommend highly enough imvho.
(Alps: dual ply super tacky Minion 2.5 up front and dual ply high roller 2.5 at the back)

I've just changed from Conti Verticals to Highroller 2.35 (60A). Highrollers have much more grip. They are also quite draggy on the road (about 1 gear difference in speed). Not noticed much difference off the road. Much more grip compared to my mate's Panaracer 2.1 (not sure exactly what flavour). He's a better rider than me, but fell off after losing front and rear traction on a steep wet grass/mud descent. Not a hint of a prob for me.
They are very light (even in 2.35 size), and cheap too. Ardent are slightly better rolling versions (maybe tiny bit less grippy) of same I think?
I ride a Trek 8500 LT btw (yr 2000 vintage).
