Neck brace.

Because my ambition often outstrips my ability.
And because taking up DH/Freeride at 38 is a stupid idea.

I stopped doing it at 38 when I crashed in a fairly major way! Still enjoy an 'enthusiastic' XC/trail centre ride, but leave the downhill/freeride stuff to the young, fearless, and quick to heal!!!

I've not been paying attention to what I've spent recently. Probably best that I don't.

Stopped counting at the carbon bars at Christmas. smile

Had to have new rubber, so some Mountain Kings were purchased. I got bought a chain cleaner, so that doesn't count. I needed a new headset this week (had to go Hope, just because) and a replacement battery for my cheapo Cree Chinese light special. Went to get bike today complete with lovely smooth new headset and came out with a pair of Madison Addict shorts (as I was so thrilled to discover I'd gone down a size to a L since September, get in!) and a Hope QR in blue as for some reason my Kahuna came without QR for the seat post.

Had a Cotic Solaris 29er demo bike with a rather spiffing set of X-Fusion forks, totally addicted to it. Awaiting build cost/deal. smile

Yeah, but it didn't cost you £3000000 from Rapha so you will look a knob in it...... wink

After saying I'd not buy much this month, I just couldn't resist ...

Also while I was at it the 2nd bike (refuse to call it winter bike anymore!) had been given the 11 speed treatment. The gulf between my 9 speed Tiagra and DA9000 was just too big so I've narrowed the gap and also given myself the chance to cannibalise either bike should something break.smile

Possibly. Probably, even, as I wouldn't want to get stranded on my new bike for something as minor as a puncture. And a saddle pack to put it in. Oh, and maybe a Storck Scenero to put that on.

I'd thought about blowing the lot on a (sub-5kg) Trek Emonda SLR 10. But I need the 'domestic brownie points' so I've set a far more sensible budget of £2,000 to £2,500 for the road bike, and a maximum of £2,000 for the new MTB.

Also, you don't want a bike that will snap in half when you look at it!!!

Trek have one of the highest frame failure rates, but because their customer service and warranty repair/swap is so good they don't attract bad press - a bit like Apple! When I bought my 'nag, 3 separate independent bike shops warned me away from Treks - all for the same reason.....

2x Royal Cutter hoodies. Not sure on these yet, they are almost too nice to wear on the bike, but they feel really good on.

One Industries Ion Jersey... one word, awesome.

661 Freeride Shorts... one word, crap.

I'm between a 36-38 with bike shorts, Fox I can't get in a 36, but others fit spot on as a 36... I bought a 38 in these and they are more like a 40. Plus, the material is far too light, they feel like they will just rip 1st time I crash (which doesn't take long tbh) and any wind will have them flapping like a flappy thing.
I prefer a tougher material like on my Endura Singletrack shorts, TBH i'm going to buy another pair of the Endura's.

The cutter hoodie is good, not very thick (probably a bit thicker than a work shirt) but has a waterproof coating and it made to be worn over a baselayer + jersey to keep the chill off. The cut of it is perfect for MTB'ing though. Longer than usual arms so they don't ride up and the rear is cut so it still fits well on the bike.

CRC have the Cutter v cheap at the mo.

I got a SS brevet jersey/gilet for £90 in the summer sales. The jersey is great but I didn't get on with gilet as it's a bit flimsy and doesn't have rear pockets like my Gore one. I put it on eBay and it fetched and frankly absurd £70. People seem to go nuts for a perceived Rapha bargain.

wavey

I went to 700 in Windsor in the week. I dropped your name, just as I was leaving, and they (k)new who you are, you "friend of the shop", you wink

Based on my stated budget and riding style, the recommendation was for a Cannondale Synapse Ultegra disc, or a Giant Defy Advanced Pro 1 with Ultegra and hydraulic R685 Discs.

I also nipped into Boutique Cycles in Murrell Green, near Hook today, and after a (brief) chat with Nev, I'm going back to talk about a Storck Scenero and a bike fit and accessories package sometime in the week. I've not kept up with the road bike mags lately, but I recall the Storck winning "Bike of the Year" awards a few years ago.

Have you had a bike fit with 700? Or do you know if they are any good at that side of things? I'm slowly boiling my 'long list' down into something approaching a manageable short list. I think Boutique and 700 are the shops at the top of it so far. Can you think of any other local-ish shops I ought to look at, that perhaps stock brands I haven't yet seen/considered?

Edit: to add a "k" which my old keyboard didn't fancy sticking in.

(Damn those pesky PH spelling police! They'll never take me alive!)

700 did a bike fit for me and cut down the seat mast. It fit like a glove from the first ride so I'm very happy with the service from them.

I'll eat an old summer cap if that's alright with you? The Sealskinz Belgian might be a little chewy.
