El Camino del Muerte (Death Road), Bolivia
Discussion
I did Death Road yesterday. Just a gentle ride down from La Cumbre Pass at 4,700m to Coroico at 1,200m approximately 54km later.
The first 22km were on tarmac followed by a short 8km climb (back in the van - boo, I'd have done it!) to the start of the old North Yungas Road now affectionately known as El Camino del Muerte or in English, Death Road.
Absolutely epic ride and not difficult at all even for a complete off road novice like me with this only being my second time on a full suspension bike with disc brakes.
Once we came off the tarmac and on to the gravel I took things easy at first, preferring to go at my own pace and was happy to sit mid pack out of nine riders catching up with the front guide and the others at each rest stop but towards the end of the day as my confidence grew and the guide seemed to be on a mission to drop everyone there were only two of us who could stick with him and by the final climb up to the hotel for lunch it was just me and the guide with the others slowly disappearing into the distance.
