OK, I posted this at the bottom of the Newbie needs advice topic, but it seems to have got a bit lost, so thought I'd start a new thread!

HAving not done any cycling since I did the London-Brighton in 2002, and no off-roading since the mid-late 90's, I've been seriously considering a 2006 Kona Fire Mountain since seeing them in the sale in Halfords on the weekend.

I saw this bike earlier in the year at £400, but managed to talk myself out of shelling out for it. I thought it looked lovely, and to my untrained eyes it seemed to have a decent spec with disc brakes, front suspension, and so on. So, now that it's come down to £330, I'm struggling to resist the temptation. I probably wouldn't buy from Halfords, but it looks like "proper" bike shops are doing it for similar prices:

My current bike (hardly ever used now) is actually a 1994 Fire Mountain, but the latest model obviously moves the game on massively. Like the original poster of the newbie thread, I would use the bike for general (mostly road-based) riding with a bit of light-moderate cross country/off roading.

So, any thoughts from those with a bit more knowledge than I?

Looks pretty good to me - I have a massive soft spot for Konas.

I think you usually get lower-spec components at a given price point, but that's because the frames are generally better than average quality. I'd buy it, ride the hell out of it and upgrade the drivetrain as and when it dies.

Well, on that solitary recommendation, I've just ordered one and I'm picking it up on Thursday after work.

Should be fun getting back into the...errrrm... saddle again!
