I'm not sure if this is suitable for the biker banter forum or not. Mods please move if you think it is.

I'm in need of a bicycle expert and a bit of advice. I'm hoping to upgrade my standard v-brakes to disc brakes. How easy or difficult is this and can anyone point me in the right direction of the parts I require?

Any info would be useful, thanks in advance.

unfortunately, you will need disc specific hubs and rims and a mounting point on the forks for the caliper so unless you have these already its pretty much a non-starter...

however, you can get seriously good v-brake set ups for not much cash these days so although it means sticking with what you have got, why not upgrade if you have lower spec v-brakes at present and i guarantee you will notice the difference

alhtough the mud/wet weather advantage of discs holds true, cheap disc brake set ups (mechanical) are not as good as well setup and maintained v-brakes....

Cheers Pablo, interesting stuff. Its about 85% road use and my pads are on their way out. After a near miss this morning they are in need of changing. I just wondered whether spending money on upgrading them to discs was worth it compared to simply replacing the pads.

Deore v-brakes front and rear for £33, includes calipers, pads and levers (but no cables) which is a bargain in anyones eyes... LX is just £2 more...

other places have XT for around £50 a pair... Stif, Chain Reaction etc
