Please help me make up my mind! The plan of reusing the components I have here, have been shelved, as they aren't worth rebuilding /servicing at 3x9 and square taper.

I can't decide which way to go for the Inbred build! It will be used as an XC machine and round where I live its flat so can use a 1x with an 40t extender ring, and a 34t front.

However I plan on doing something nuts on it like a MTB marathon race so think a 2x could be advantagious.

Last time I spec'd a MTB chainset the only option was a 3x!

What are your thoughts?

What length mech do you run on a 42t rear?

Thats what worries me. However last time I went out on the 3x9, I monitored what gear changes I made. Whilst I was up and down the cassette, I never changed the front ring once.

Since I built the bike, I can only rememeber using the granny and big ring once each.
