duff gears on my allez

Cycling to work today and was changing down on the rear cogs on my allez 24, the the right shifter suddenly went very floppy. It seems the cable is still in one piece as it is very slightly moving the rear shifter when moved but it doesnt change any of the gears. Not quite sure what has happened, it might just have been stretched.

Bit short of time today - is fitting a new cable an easy job on these bikes or is it a bit of a nightmare?

Not too impressed with it to be honest, the bloody thing is only 5 months old (or so) and although it has been used daily it has been used with care..

well I spent two hours trying to sort it yesterday to no avail. it seems that the knobbly bit (for want of a better word) will not stay in its seat in the handlebar shifter and moves around after a while, despite my best efforts to seat it. No idea why it came out of its seat in the first place because the cable appears to be in one piece.

Im fed up with buggering about with it to be honest and getting oil and crap everywhere so will probably take it to the bike doctor (reluctantly) on Saturday. anyone know how much it will be for labour to do this?

I think I have one of these kicking around at home http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Mod... in case the dr recommends me replacing it so hopefully it will fit.

I dont think it's putting adequate tension on it, no. Nevertheless I'll see if the local bike shop can sort it this weekend for not a lot, otherwise I'll have to pop into Evans and see what they have to say.

Bit annoying though because up to now it's been good as gold and used solidly for about 5 months, but not abused..

..to be fair to Evans (st pauls) they had a look at it and although they said there was nothing wrong with the shifter they replaced the wire (and fitted it) free of charge.

cant say fairer than that.
