How much impact can a road bike take?

Reason I ask is today I got a bit lost today and was cycling down the thames path as I could see where I wanted to get to (Hammersmith) but not how to, anyway before I knew it I was faced with a 4 set of steps and had to jump down them as if I had braked I'd have fallen off... There wasn't any noises etc, and all seemed to be fine, just a bit worried that I've put to much pressure on it...!
