Need a GT as it will not fit in my very narrow garage and the hardtop will be on from October to March as I have no alternative other than to park it on my driveway. If I could get it in the garage then the insurance would be even
cheaper!

Mine lives on the drive no problem and I use it all year round. Just make sure the hood is properly treated.

What is the difference in premium between a GT and non GT on the drive?

I don't know if there is any difference in insurance premium between a GT and a non GT. My problem is that it would be cheaper for me if it would fit in my garage for overnight parking.

GT is marginally cheaper, but not sure it'd be the full 5% discount most insurers offer for garage vs drive.

Are there any problems with the Non GT letting in water with the hood up when parked? I know that the Lotus Elise is notorious for this. Is the S2K OK on this aspect?

The reason I ask is that once I have bought an S2K in the spring I intend to keep it for at least 10 Years. It will have to live in the open for all that time. That is why I want a GT so that the roof can be fitted for the winter months.

Ours leaked for a little bit... got the window rubbers changed (warranty job) and all has been well since...

Owners are suppose to put (silicone?) grease on the hood seals (especially the unseen edges) at certain periods but they never do (it's in the manual they never read)

Dealerships being English would never think of this

As it's in the Owners Manual perhaps someone could look it up and let us know

Having said that my MX-5 had trouble with one side of the hood (rubber) seal within a few months of use - as with most problems on these type of Japanese cars they are minor and show up quite quickly (well within the guarantee period)

Gt's usually bring slightly smaller insurance costs since it's harder to get in a hard top than slice a hood, I use the proper Shin Etsu grease on the seals and it also helps with the creaks and squeaks, and it doesn't seem to leak very much(all soft tops do to some degree), try Adrian Flux for a quote, found his firm to be very good.

smile Nope shouldn't leak, you can get water drops in when opening and closing doors because of vacuum

But on most soft tops a properly fitted hood that's treated now and again (if required, and not that often) should not leak

I had a 12 year old TVR with a roof that did not leak and it had very little maintainence

Is Shin Etsu silicone grease?

Bear - yes.

As for leaks...none at all...just get a wet leg when opening the door in the rain...runs down the seal and off the front...

A few drips yes, but a wet leg, you wanna get that sorted - loose under and over pants or it's a rubber glove and lubricated digit biggrin

So then if it's maintained properly then the soft top should not leak at all.

Mate of mine has a 95 MX-5. (Had it from new). That lives on his driveway all year and the hood does not leak at all. (Still the origonal). He wants me to buy the new MX-5 so he can assess that before he changes his but I have told him the S2K is a superior car so it won't leak at all!

I've got an MY02 S2000, and I'm seriously impressed by its lack of leaks! Much better than my old Saab Convertible
