Good God, for all the self made millionaires on PH, there's some nit pickers and sticklers for the rules as well.

OP, go ahead and do it.

1) You're not disposing of a car, you're selling certain parts of it prior to disposal.
2) You're not "starting a breakers yard" you're selling a few car parts, one car at a time.
3) You're not running a business you're doing selling some bits of your car before getting rid of it.

When you have done a few cars like this and believe you have a viable business, then by all means get the licences, get the planning permissions, register as self employed and all the rest. But don't let this stop you dipping a toe in the water, and for heavens sake do not spend the first 6 months bending over backwards and forwards to comply with a bunch of regulations if the business turns out not to work so well anyway.

Try it and see. Good luck.

Be warned...

IIRC scrap cars are classified as toxic waste and are legally required to be broken in a special yard with an impermeable floor covering the entire area.

You will be breaking local planing laws by running a breakers yard from your garage and god only knows what laws regarding toxic waste.

The only loop hole I can see is if there is an allowance of X cars per year or a certain quanitity sold to cater for the home mechanic. There has to be some clause like this but it will almost certainly severely cut down any legal business that you have in mind.
No. Under the End of Life Vehicle Directive, all cars must be disposed of via an Authorised Treatment Facility.

So how far can you dismantle a car before that directive applies?

In the example given earlier I had left the glass and bodyshell and not much else and the scrap men took it away to do all the paperwork and register it as disposed of. So the answer IME is completely.

Well, logically, I would say that 'carrying on a business' which involves the dismantling of end of life cars would be it.

So a private individual who can't bear to send his rusty heap directly to the scrap yard and dismantles it in order to sell the good bits before sending the remainder to a scrap dealer would be ok, but someone who sets up a business to do that wouldn't.
