How about an animal charity, they always need help.
With your skills, fundraising/sponsorship etc etc.
Added bonus, you get to help the animals!

It's quite refreshing to see a generation coming to maturity that shows some altruism and consideration for others... unlike the vile boomers who were only ever interested in-

a. How can I make as much money for MYSELF as possible?

and

b. How can I spend as much money on MYSELF as possible?

Is there something like this near where you live?

I want to get some patents off the ground and finding someone trustworthy to do elementary digging around/fact finding is rather difficult. I work full time as well.

Become a magistrate?

My dad got involved with the Arts Council, but I think he was just after free theatre tickets to be honest.

1/ NED / Trustee for a charity
2 / [University or College] Trustee / NED
3 / School governor
4 / Princes Trust

1 and 2 are similar. For 2 you don't need any knowledge of the higher levels education, in fact I would say it is a handicap. They lack people with pragmatism and good business skills.

3 - Schools have no problem with getting parent governors while their children are attending. What they lack is independent people look at the long term and beyond the time little Jenson is attending.

4 - Amazing organisation. You can change lives.

Is mentoring really lucrative?
Sad - do you get that sometimes people like to do things for others, and they get enjoyment from that, rather than doing everything for personal gain?

I have today signed up for the local chamber of commerce mentoring programme, no pay but hopefully it will enrich my life and stimulate my brain.

Thanks for the this and everyone else's suggestions, The Princes Trust has been mentioned to me by a few people, it does appeal.

Have a look here. A lot of charities, museums etc look here for volunteers. Your skills would make a worthwhile contribution to a museum. Why not find a museum who needs good governance, and go from there? The added bonus is that you can choose a museum whose collection interests you.
