just talking in the office and it turns out everyone else is on the 747 code for the yea, i'm on 739. is there a reason for this? i'm not paying any loans or anything back, and there are people on higher and lower incomes here who are both on the 747 code.

any ideas?

You should have received a coding notice explaining why you are receiving a lower allowance than standard.

Most likely culprits in my experience are things like medical cover and glasses. Have you had any benefit like this in 2010 tax year?

Of course, it is not beyond the HMRC to make a mistake. I would say give them a call to see what the reduction is for.

no, not had any form of benefit whatsoever. student loan paid off years ago and pension contributions all up to date. bit of a mystery tbh. i've emailed council head office (who deal with my salary) so we'll have to see. completely baffled by it.

update:

reply from the tax office...

"Mr ********

You are correct that the normal tax code should be 747L. I have looked
back through your tax codes over the years and it would appear that your
code was originally operated from your P45 in 2003. Subsequently the
budget increases have been applied each year. I would suggest contacting
the Tax office, to check whether this code is correct, the phone number is
  • ** ******. For your information, you tax codes for each year and the
standard code for the year are listed below.

Year Your Code Standard Code

03/04 453L 461L
04/05 466L 474L
05/06 481L 489L
06/07 495L 503L
07/08 514L 522L
08/09 595L 603L
09/10 639L 647L
10/11 739L 747L

I hope this information will be of use to you.

Regards"

right, before i phone the tax office, is this in my interest to flag up?

On what you have posted, Yes as each year you will have paid slightly to much Tax, not a lot but it adds up.
and if you ring them and nothing happens put it in writing in a few weeks, they are not always quick.
