I'm increasingly unhappy with my job, done it for 12 years and am thinking about a change. I can afford a couple of years off to retrain.

What careers would the panel advise?

What do you do now and (to within five grand or so) what do you earn?

No point me telling an 80k GP to retrain as a paramedic. smile

If you are at all techy you might want to look at data science at Dundee Uni. My own research suggests that graduates with this kind of background will be in high demand. It can be done via distance learning

To be successful (if that's your goal), provide what is scarce. Otherwise, what do you want from a working career? Pressure? Risk? Reward? Recognition? Security? More leisure time?

You need to identify your life goals and narrow things down from there based upon the above and other factors.

Good luck!

Cheers for replies guys, lecturer currently but a little disillusioned with the business. Income 30-35k.

I want to do something old fashioned and artisan, where people come to you because you have a skill, a trade. Something where you can build your craft instead of having to throw away your knowledge every couple of years and replace it with all new learning.

Stone mason!

Or architecture? Architecture is a bit long...

Plumber?

The plumber a few doors down from me has an Aston Martin Vantage, Range Rover, boat and jetski...

Oddly, after my success with fixing my own bog the other day, i did consider plumbing.
