My son is graduating this summer with a 'first' in Physics (4 year masters course) but has drawn a blank on the career front so far, after travelling all over the UK (Aberdeen, London, Crawley, Leicester to name a few) for interviews/assessment centres etc.

He also did a 10 week placement in Hamburg last summer, at DESI.

He has full driving license with his own car

So, anyone know of any firms taking on graduates?

Yorkshire would be handy, to save travel for Mum and Dad !!!!!

PM me if you know anything

thanks

Does he want to stay in Science or open to other careers? Retail Credit Risk (Banking) is an active area with plenty of opportunities for graduates across the UK, including Yorkshire.

Thanks!

He is open to other things, he is good with his hands too, hobbies include building things out of wood (just built his own computer desk) as well as building his own computers (liquid cooled) he also mended our TV last year when it stopped working, so he's also handy with electronics and can wield a soldering iron!

A-levels in maths, chemistry and Physics (all A star!)

Speaks good German as well, although that's not much use in Yorkshire!

Don't Lucas have a huge operation around there? Or another of the engineering companies?

Fella needs to get himself started asap, not necessarily "the perfect job" but it's always easier finding a new job when you're in one.

Good Luck to him and I hope he [eventually] finds a placement that utilises his obvious talents.

Yep - he should take anything he can find whilst looking for his actual career move. If nothing else it'll give him a professional reference to use when applying elsewhere.

Which is exactly what I am about to do myself!

How's his programming skills?

Physics people I know either ended up writing code, or got into finance to be an "evil banker".

If he is a straight A student from a Russell group university and would consider working in the Manchester area then one of my previous companies would hire that type of academic background into their development or client/consulting graduate programmes. PM me for more details. They are not a big brand name type of company but in my opinion have as good a proposition.

Surely a good fit for Nuclear industry? (Amec, BAE, Atkins, places like that?) got friends who did physics working at places like GCHQ (not quite sure its GCHQ, but one of those semi-goverment things that do military stuff).

Having said that, I have other physics friends who couldn't find a decent job for love nor money and ended up staying around in uni to do PhDs. Problem then is it seems easy to then go on to being an RA, then lecturer and before you know it, stuck in academia.

Nowt wrong with academia.

I'll be advertising for a PhD researcher soon, and a masters level Physics graduate would be suitable. Not Yorkshire though, near Milton Keynes.

Similarly, I've got a couple up for grabs at the moment in Yorkshire. Which institution is he graduating from?

Thanks for all the replies and PM's so far, but keep them coming, they are all a great help. I didn't realise there would be so much choice for him to consider.

He graduates from Lancaster Uni BTW

I'll show the responses to him later when he comes home, and reply to the PM's

Thanks all.

Law firms like Physics grads but he would probably need to do a law conversion course. Lots of physics grads in the City particularly in fund management and banking.

I know you say Yorkshire would be handy, but would he consider leafy Surrey? My company are always on the lookout for good graduates, although we mostly take chemists and biologists and the role would probably be scientific software testing. If you think he would be interested, PM me and we can talk further.

Edit: (to sell the job better wink) He wouldn't have to stay in testing, plenty of our testers have graduated into other roles in the company (s/w development, consultancy, project management). It's a great place to work, full of very clever and sociable people.
