As a way to supplement my income whilst starting my own business i'm looking for some kind of 'contract' employment that I can do from home. For the past 4 years i've been a Sales Executive for a prestige car dealership but I also have an IT background. Nothing would be too mundane and i'd be happy enough doing data entry or typing etc. CV available on demand.

Regards,
Phil

Phil,

My advice would be to spend the time you want to use working from home supplementing your income actually working your business instead. Your income will be well suplemented when the money starts rolling in from your venture. That's exactly what i did and it worked for me.

If you do something else to supplement your income then you will be too busy doing that and your venture will never get off the ground, or will always be part-time. I know because i tried that for a short while and it never worked out. I quickly learned that committing to your business venture was much more important, no matter what. Also supplemented income won't really amount to much and ultimately isn't really worth doing.

Go on Phil.....Dive in.....All or nothing!!! That's my motto.

Hi mate,

Thanks for the advice. I have certainly considered that however, the venture even with the best will in the world probably won't keep me occupied 5-6 full days per week. It just won't, there's a limit to what can be achieved and once it's done, it's done so to speak. That's really why I was hoping for something else on the side.

I'm half tempted just to do a bit of car trading from home to be honest.

If i had the time and money to devote i would love to do some car trading, more as a hobby really but i work bloody hard 5days a week from early till late so i look forward to having my weekends free. Sounds like a good idea though. You only need to sell one car a week to make some OK money.

I don't know what your new business venture is but from what you have said it sounds like it won't keep you busy all week so maybe having another string to your bow is the way to go.

I hope you find something interesting and profitable to do.

Cheers, Francis

Escaping the motor trade eh Phil ?

Your idea of trading from home is probably your best bet for now imo. You obviously know the trade and it can take up however much time you want it to.

Good luck in your new venture, whatever it may be. thumbup

Go to say this is appealing to me also - it's hard to admit that whatever you do you will be starting small though, and if like me you're currently at a prestige brand dealership, it's a tough break away to make!

My employer sets out that it is a sackable offence to start trading while employed by them...

So it has to be a completely clean break!

Have you done it yet and made a break and started on your own?

Yep It's going very well too. Hugely enjoyable stuff!

I haven't done much trading actually, the odd bits and bobs here and there. I've had a couple of people task me with hunting out motors though and i've put some of that business back through my old employer (I always have and always will get on with the directors at the place I used to work at). However, funnily enough I had a pint with a chap last night and I think we're going to take a trip to the auctions next week to bag a few choice motors.

I'm actually doing quite a bit on EBay at the moment, it's suprising how much money can be made on it if you buy and sell the right commodity. At the moment i'm negotiating on a few thousand items of mobile phone accessories that i'm hoping to move on quickly and profitably.

I must admit, i'm really glad I took the plunge! I'm coming out with as much as I used to when I was 'employed', but the freedom of being self-employed is excellent in the sense that you're your own boss. Some days I rise about 10ish and have a nice easy morning and no-one can moan at me. On the flip side, you find yourself working all the time, even if its just checking & responding to e-mails. It sends my missus loopy, half way through a movie i'll jump onto the PC quickly just to see if anything's happening.

I'd seriousley recommend it to anyone.

Jealousy strikes me! I need to find a few in-fill bits too in an ideal world so that I could make a clean break from my hole I call work!!!
