This helps clarify, words of Christof Lischka m135i project manger
How exactly did the engineers of BMW M and BMW AG collaborate on developing the BMW M135i?
"It was important that the M characteristics typical of the BMW M Performance Automobiles were added by our BMW M GmbH colleagues. So we set up a kind of buddy system involving close collaboration between BMW M and BMW AG staff. In particular, BMW M engineers masterminded the differentiating features such as driving dynamics, drive and defining characteristics. The results were continuously refined in numerous common test drives and meetings - the collaboration was very intensive. Project management in this case was in the hands of BMW AG but also reported to BMW M GmbH - so there was a counterbalance here, too. This meant that it was possible to develop and present the BMW M Performance Automobile alongside the start of the basic BMW 1 Series 3-door model.
A typical M automobile has about 80% changed or completely newly developed parts as compared to its equivalent basic model. Where does a BMW M Performance Automobile such as the BMW M135i stand here?
With the BMW M135i we are at around 30%."
Theoretically it's not even intended to be half "M", if parts are your measure of "M"ness then it's a sprinkle of M dust, but it goes a long way making it feel "M"fun.
In amongst all this ego-driven bks, this is potentially quite interesting - do you have a link please? How exactly did the engineers of BMW M and BMW AG collaborate on developing the BMW M135i?

As for the rest of this thread, I really wonder how much less animosity there would be towards this car if it had been EXACTLY the same, but without an M badge. I'd imagine even one or two CSL owners would have liked it then
In the interests of peace and harmony, I drive 3 series touring and it has those little M badges on the front wings. How about you all unite and vent against that instead?

erm...not convinced the E92 M3 is an M car. Should be in the general section.
It's more of a GT cruiser really as too porky with it's tonne of obsolete gadgets, has the torque of a sewing machine and comes as standard with serious security vulnerabilities.
I think the 320d M Sport is more true to the M ethos. It looks like one (sporty trim and M badges) sounds like one (just mention 'M Sport' at the golf club bar) has more in gear urge and has better economy so you don't feel guilty hooning it around.

This thread has got a tad out of hand! I'm not sure why some of the posters on here resort to personal insults.
My view is that it isn't an M car but I'm not really that bothered if people want to discuss it in here. It just amused me the other night how many of the current threads are M135i related.

I think we only have BMW to blame here, they put the M in M135i but at the same time state its an M performance car and therefore not a true M car.
So the question should be, does the new sub brand M Performance belong in the M Power sub forum? Technically perhaps not as they are non M Power cars. But equally they probably belong here more than in the standard BMW forum due to being a derivative of the M brand.
Ultimately does it really matter? Cars are for driving not willy waving.

It's SO funny how riled those race driver champions with a string of victories get about their cars.
Meanwhile "us" drivers couldn't give a hoot - whatever input the M boys put in (almost a third by the sound of it), it's done wonders just like the R boys worked magic with the mk4 R32. At least the M boys started with a good base - the R chaps had to turn a wobbling pile of jelly into something genuinely fun to drive and they (almost) did it.
So is the AMG A45 a "real" AMG car? If they'd called it something else (just the A45) would AMG owners get all stuff towards A45 owners? Do RS Audi owners get all silly about S cars?
As for the M Sport thing - I have always thought M Sport stuff is a bit of a joke - ponsy wheels, bodykit and NO performance improvement. The M135i has a slightly "hotted up" N55 35i engine and rather amusingly, so is the new M3/4 and the latter are far more "M" than many M cars; lightish, six cylinder, etc.
Anyway I have a bit of Italian blood - am I Italian? No. Someone with 80% Italian blood? Yes they probably are Italian. Who cares? Probably no one.
Enjoy your comical frothing chaps and don't forget, all you did is go out and buy a car just like we all did. Luckily ours don't seem to come with a boot full of pompous, vacuous image baggage.

We bought a better car than yours
A shame you couldn't afford a GT3 isn't it? Much better than your souped up saloon rep with no brakes and a cardboard boot. And slower to 100 than our little non M hatchbacks. No wonder you're all so full of vitriol.
Oh and a CS is a much better road car.
I have owned an E60 M5 and currently own an E46 M3 and an M135i. The M135i is not an M car by badge, but in my experience it is just as good if not better than the two M cars I have had experience with. Couldn't care less what section it sits in, it is an awesome little car that can go from being comfortable and economical to completely mental the next at the click of a button. For those that haven't driven it and still want to hate, your loss.
st like this is just immature bks, I'm waiting on 'my dad is bigger than yours!' as it wouldn't look out of place in here.

I wonder if we'll go through this same "Is it or isn't it" st again when the M235i comes out?
