E39 M5 prices on the rise ?
Discussion
Yes as LiquidSmoke answered budget around £2.3K for Timing chain, Guides & Big ends - will all the ancillary parts!
What Phil @ CPC doesn't know about these cars doesn't need knowing! He's a great chap & I can say I will use him again without a doubt - even though I live 100 miles away!
I dropped the car off at him on sat and picked it up the next sat.
The car feels great, I hadn't realised how much I had been loosing. Motorway cruising is so much better, I have to keep checking I haven't left it in 4th or 5th gear. Around town I have so much torque now that once again I can cruise around at 30mph in 6th gear!
Well worth the money, yes for more than you can pick up a second hand engine (I think they go for £1600 ish) but with a second hand engine you will need to do all this anyway and pay for the swap.

+1 for not knowing what I was missing until it was fixed. Feels like a new car. IMO nothing else will need doing for another 100k, as head gasket issues are few and far between, and problems with the main bearings and heads are virtually non existent.
Interesting, the talk of running better at low revs in high gears could make this worth doing for my car. Guess this is going to end up being a very expensive year.liquidsmoke said:
You don't *need* all those parts. Any part marked with a question mark were items that I didn't initially order. I was only going to order them if needed. I didn't need them in the end.
Ignore my costing ramblings. Just couldn't be arsed to edit as I'm on an ipad.
Also the sections aren't exactly correct. E.g. Some items in big end section are actually vanos.
Thanks very much for posting all that up, it's a great help.Ignore my costing ramblings. Just couldn't be arsed to edit as I'm on an ipad.

I love PH!
Congratulations, I hope it's what you wanted after all the fuss.
I'm still hunting for a facelift in blue, without success it has to be said. I have just seen this however, if it weren't so far away...

Nice one!
What's the spec?
Looks good
It's a 2002 with extended heritage leather, aluminium trim and the rather dated satnav etc. but still nice to have, l may consider a digital upgrade, but to be honest it's got the rear silencers deleted so listening to the radio is the last thing on my mind. What's the spec?
Looks good

That one in the classifieds does look good.As I'm sure you know there are a lot of poorly maintained ones out there so travelling a bit to see one that has a good write up could be well worth it.

I wouldn't fancy a self-serviced M5 myself, despite the reassurance in the advert. I do like that colour though.I'm still hunting for a facelift in blue, without success it has to be said. I have just seen this however, if it weren't so far away...

I'm enquiring about it just now. It had an Inspection 2 at M3 Motor Co. near Edinburgh last year so not sure to what extent it's been self-serviced.
I do know over £1800 was spunked in one go on the clutch, flywheel (which was ridiculously expensive compared to what you can get one for, £1000!)and various other bits and pieces.

Budget won't extend to that.
This is a bit impulsive as I only bought a 530i about 5 weeks ago.
In all honesty a decent m5 is not so easy to find so not really advisable as an impulse buy...best be prepared to wait for a good'un. Worth it though, I like the 530 but the M is a different class. This is a bit impulsive as I only bought a 530i about 5 weeks ago.
