I know that prices have dropped massively for the E46 M3's but was considering changing mine for a new shape M5 (55/06) plate so thought I would see what was on offer from the dealer.

Was astounded when he offered me £16k for my car which he seemed to feel was the best price I would get - even privately!

Would not budge at all even when I pointed out he had an 05 CAB on his forecourt for £28k with more miles as well.

Spec is:

04/54
M3 CAB in Titanium Silver
SMG
Hardtop
Full grey leather interior
12,600 miles with FBMWSH
11 months MOT
3 months Tax
Close to a years warranty left
Tracker fitted
Next service not for another 12,500 miles
Two new rear tyres (1,000 miles)
Refurbished calipers all round so no rust
Stainless hoses
Sat Nav (DVD)
TV
6 CD Changer
In car telephone module (if you have an Ericsson phone!)
Heated + electric memory seats
19" wheels (no marks at all)
Immaculate all round apart from few stone chips to bumper and bonnet (approx 10 - 15 in total)

Surely it must be worth more than that?????
YHM! And it's relatively good news.

But they may have had some more profit margin in the car they sold you?

Mind you, you can understand the dealers wanting to cover themselves when you see the way cars are shedding value. Look at this E92 M3 that's lost £2k per month since new!

I am actually shaking as I write this but I actually agree with D.......... I am now off to have a shower, I feel dirty.
You're agreeing with fact, so don't worry!

When you mentioned the one on the fourcourt what was his reply, i know you said he wouldn't budge but how did he justify 28,000 for it when only offering that for yours

Then they had no need to put warranty on car etc etc. Saved them a good few quid.

True, though after discounting, prepping etc, not much margin if it hangs about for a few weeks!

They will offer rediculously low part exchange values. You're far better off selling it privately - several grand better off. I personally will never part exchange out of principle - unless I was rich - because you are always worse off without realising. As said above dealers are there to make money. Good luck with your sale.

Worse off financially you mean.

For some people (lots)_ the time dedicated to selling a car privately is best used to do other things which are more valuable.

Yes, financially. Placing a £10-£15 ad takes less than two mins, and letting a few potential buyers look over your car is just the same as a dealer or two doing the same .. hardly time consuming. Well worth it since you can make on average £500-£1000+ if not more selling it privately compared to part exchanging it.

In this particular case the dealer is taking the piss though.

Except that in many cases you waste hours with dreamers/test pilots and then when you do get a sale there is the difficulty re secure payment methods that satisfy both parties.
