Slightly off topic, but having owned an e39 M5 and currently own an e46 M3, they're both grouchy cars from cold which actually adds to character IMO. Is the e92 M3 the same?
YesMy old E46 M3 was very grouchy when cold and kangarooing was always on the cards unless you were careful with the throttle.
I still warm up the E92 keeping the revs low until it hits 75 degrees but it's perfectly smooth during this time.

Never had an E46 soperhaps my 'yes' was a bit hasty. I always thought my E92 was quite grouchy though till warmed up.My old E46 M3 was very grouchy when cold and kangarooing was always on the cards unless you were careful with the throttle.

My E46 M3 CS was prone to kangarooing from a cold start if you weren't careful; however I always found that once up through the gearbox and it was fine. For example, it's about a mile from my village to the main road and, although the car could kangaroo getting out of the cul-de-sac where I live if I wasn't paying attention, by the time I got to the give-way to join the main road it was always fine even though the engine was still pretty much stone cold. So yes it could kangaroo but the problem was very short-lived and certainly didn't last throughout the warm-up period! My old E46 M3 was very grouchy when cold and kangarooing was always on the cards unless you were careful with the throttle.

This is PH it's what posters do, same as they hated the e92 against the e46 etc etc.CH is spot on.
The F80 is a great car as were the other 4 M cars I've had, some better at some things than others of course and all have differing characters and traits, but people like to niggle and say mines better etc...
They also forget that their opinion, is just that and that others needs/wants or likes/dislikes will be different.

Except CH likes every sporty car he road tests...thats why manufacturers keep letting him review them.
I think it's difficult not to like them Peter, as they are all bloody good cars, recently I've driven a C63 coupe it was lovely and an RS6 which was also great at what it does. AMG/RS/M don't make crap cars they're all very good and so they should be for the dollar they charge.
Is it really fair to compare two cars when one was designed over 7 years earlier?
Clearly the F80 is going to be better on every single technical aspect.
I love my E92, but I do keep driving the F80 as I feel I should like it more than I do.
I nearly bought one just before the summer but when I got to the point of haggling over the last £500 I realised my heart really was not in it.
At the end of the day we are all different and all have different priorities.
We had a last minute dilemma taking my son back to Uni recently - not enough space, so on went the roof box.
So maybe the F80 is not better in every single way after all

I class myself as a petrol head rightly or wrongly but I regretted buying a E92 M3 pretty quickly.
If I'd experienced the cars you've experienced I just can't see how a 3 series with a nice engine would be motoring perfection, but appreciate we all like different things though.
Broken record. If I'd experienced the cars you've experienced I just can't see how a 3 series with a nice engine would be motoring perfection, but appreciate we all like different things though.
And I feel exactly the same way.
The F-series M3/M4s do the measurable things better (acceleration, mpg, lateral g) but do not stir the soul - well not mine anyway.
I have had more than enough time to enjoy their "betterness" on track, but always, without exception get so much more enjoyment with the subjective/emotional things when I get back into my E92.
And most of all, I really enjoy driving mine at sane speeds, with that exquisite throttle response, fabulously hi-tech mechanical character of the engine. Wonderfully unstressed all the way to the red-line. With the turbo engine you just don't bother to wind it out, as it is quicker in the mid-range and sounds.....well, it has to be said....contrived and harsh at high revs, so why bother?
My only regret is that I did not buy one of the last ones in 2013, but I still have a late, and to me ideally specced Competition Pack car, and love every drive in it!
And still get so many unsolicited compliments on the car, from complete strangers.

Tis a beautiful engine the S65, you're much better driver than me Tony but where I feel the F80 excels for me is the fast road handling and the directness of it all, I just love going round corners and roundabouts in it.
The front end has so much grip the car feels really stiff (on the road can't speak for the track) and rear just digs in and flows round, as you know I change my cars just about every year but I'm keeping this one.
Loved my old CP e92 though for many other reasons (engine/throttle response/playful rear end/interior etc...)
