I'm just wondering out of the 3 estates E63 AMG RS6 and M5 did be M5 come last? If yes I'd say it's pretty obvious why - traditionally they have not offered an M5 touring whereas he others have that pedigree. The F10 isn't an Estate either.
So BMW dipped toes in.
I wonder factually out of the 3 which was the "best" - none are track cars so its load hauling comfort tractability. Also it was pretty out gunned - RS6 pumping near 580bhp from its v10 bi turbo and wasn't the E63 6.2v8 pumping 550-575bhp ie kind of a generation away from what you could actually buy on the market.
Former E61 M5 owner here - 2.5yrs and 20k done, 3 Ring Trips, 3 Wales trips, numerous jaunts to the 172mph. So BMW dipped toes in.

The outright numbers pumped by the Audi and MB mean zilch. MB actually made the same power as the S85. In standard form the M5 was still the fastest around the N-Ring (if it mattered) and the most driver focused estate ever made. True, you can tune the Audi to 1000hp if you have the funds, but the engine is a soulless lump compared to the screamer in the BMW. The 6.2 in the MB is an absolute masterpiece, but the chassis is not as good as the E61. If you want a car, which would make you long for an open and sweeping road in North Wales, then the E61 M5 is the only one.

It's the only RHD M Estate car that's ever been made/come to the UK I think ? There were some previous generation E34 Estate's but only left hand drive.
I saw one parked up only a couple of days ago and thought to myself what a rare car it was!
I think they're highly sort after.
Rare doesn't mean it will appreciate. I saw one parked up only a couple of days ago and thought to myself what a rare car it was!

Was the E55k/E63 AMG/C6 RS6 avant superior competition?

For whatever reason Audi have the "Performance Avant" sector sown up....I think the fact they offer Quattro on these cars makes a big difference as a lot of people want them as the ultimate go anywhere at any time of year car. Merc do better at it too! It's the only time BMW tried to sell one here and I very much doubt they'll try again...even in Europe.
A few reason I guessRS2 Porsche
RS4 B5 Cosworth
RS6 C5 Cosworth - saloon version went into the Le Mans series racing. Engine used in the Gumpert Appolo.
Ie Racing pedigree
Although I have an E60 M5 if I was looking for a performance estate car I wouldn't be looking at anything BMW. Audi/ Merc for me and thats coming from someone who's had 2 M5's and 2 M3's as my last 4 cars. I will admit I've always preferred fast saloon cars even over coupes but the E61 M5 doesnt do it for me, I don't think BMW are that great at styling touring versions. The Audi RS versions have better styling.
Well I took the plunge just over a month ago for my E60 M5 for £14'000. I've bought an absolute dog to be fair. Needs plenty of work. But that doesn't bother me. I have a V10. I have got this car not only to enjoy driving it, but also in the hope I've bought it at rock bottom prices. Admittedly, I've got a fair few thousand to put into it to get it back to peak condition with all original parts etc, but I'm hoping that future appreciation will negate that for me.
As it has been said before, where else can you get a genuine 500+bhp V10, 200+mph capable 5 seat saloon for these sorts of prices? That being said, upkeep is ridiculous on these! I've spent £2'000 on maintenance and repairs in my first month of ownership but it hasn't put me off one bit! Ask youtube guy Shmee150 what does it cost to run a supercar, he will tell you it costs thousands a year! And that is exactly what we have here. It's in a class of its own and hopefully a good future classic. As soon as I'm done driving round in it (if ever) I will be putting it into storage until the time comes to part with my investment. For the meantime, the approaching cold weather and possible snow is looking to be a bit of a challenge considering the car wants to wheel spin in 4th! (note to self, previous owner put terrible cheap tyres on it. Replace with good tyres!!!)
Fingers crossed.

Good luck! i bought one for 16k FSH and the engine blew (well spun a shell). Immense cars still have it and wouldn't get rid yet! think I've spent near 7k on mine now including the new engine/clutch in 9months! There was an E34 M5 Touring as well, but I guess you mean sell in the UK as these were LHD only I believe.V10Ace said:
IMO, it's the M6 that will hold out and increase in time.
V10 in a semi-impractical, rwd coupé body...
Limited numbers, relatively very rare....
Only way to get that set-up again will be a Lamborghini balboni or something, which while in a different league, cost's major league money.
M6 is a second car that you make as loud as relatively bearable and smile like a fat Cheshire cat all day.
Oh and it still does 200 mph....
M6 is the future gold.
I thought the same way too, but kept driving it, so in Feb 2015 at 165,000 miles my 2006 M6 was apparently worth less than 10k. Perhaps should have kept it as a second car on one hand, but on the other hand enjoyed a lot of miles (159k) in a fabulous car. V10 in a semi-impractical, rwd coupé body...
