I was going to shut up, but since I still can't see it - where does it say on a particular journey? The OP says at 80mph he was doing 31mpg, at a higher speed 29mpg, and at a lower speed 47.8mpg. But what was the average for the 290 mile journey?

He then went on to say that filling the car proved the mpg correct. It can only prove the average mpg for the full tank, not what the individual sections' economy was, fairly obviously. Which is why I queried the overall average, which he said himself he'd worked out.

Ask a sensible question, get 3 pages of argument rolleyes
I'd suggest it was the particular journey (my words not the OP's) to work?

So is he saying he averaged 31mpg for the whole thing, which is truly excellent?

Well, I am off sick now and not having the pleasure of another drive until the new year.
as most are asking when i topped up the tank after the whole journey and including a few miles running around the town it was just over 29mpg (cant remember exactly)
I think about 10 miles town driving dropped it from the computer figures, but I had reset it anyway and around town only reading 23mpg.
I still think its good on a long run, For what the car is its impressive MPG figures, those who think its not must be comparing it to a diesel as ive not seen many other 343BHP cars returning that.

Merry Xmas and happy new year!

Hi guys

I certainly didn't mean to come across as patronising - so apologies if I've come across that way.

But the fact does remain that I believe that the 45mpg figure isn't accurate - even if the mpg over the 'whole' journey was validated at the pump. And as such I think it's fair game making the point (and then remaking it when challenged).

Perhaps I should work on my presentation skills however......

Anyway, happy Christmas folks.

Cheers
RS

Oops think ive just pressed this twice!

Get yourself to the M1 roadworks put it on cruise at 50mph then reset the trip computer. carry on for 10 miles and bish bosh MPG in the late 40s. They can do it.
Jackie Stewart once said dont press the accelerater if you know you have to take your foot off......A bit difficult sometimes on Britains roads but it makes sense.

I too hold my hands up an apologise if my posts are taken as condescending. Totally not intended.

With regards to the 50 on the M1, is it still there? I'll be doing it Thurs am but think that it's been lifted for the holidays?

when i used my E36 Evo for buisness I averaged 29mpg over the whole 40k miles I did (yes i did keep track as I had to reclaim the mileage)... I live 10miles in the countryside so it was up and down the box and do rag it about sometimes....
The last 10k miles have seen a drop to 24mpg as i just use it for sub 10mile trips.

So they are economical for a performance car... I had a ML500 that had slightly less performance and did 17mpg max and the cossie I had never got above 22mpg.

Personally I have never agreed with the justification of having a 2nd car to run about in and a performance car for weekends.... thats why my everyday car is now a noble and the M3 is now my family runabout.
Thats why to me, owning a performance car that does good mpg is important and is one reason why i still have the M3.

What the OP was saying is that when his car read out 45mpg+ on his journey that the car was doing that particular MPG during THAT moment in time.

Most cars indicate such figures. I'm sure if you put a Ferrari 550 Maranello in 6th gear and trundled around at 30mph on a clear, empty road it would read a spectacular MPG figure too. But, that is only what the car is doing at THAT time. Throw in some heavy traffic, some lead-footed driving and that miraculous figure will disappear.

What a car does over an entire journey is more important rather than 'snap shot' representations of fuel economy.

Besides, let's look at the facts; 1600kg BMW, 3.2 engine, 343bhp, capable of keeping up with a Ferrari F355, will blow most cars out of the water with its performance yet it can do similar mpg figures what family saloons were doing only a decade ago and we were marevelling at their effeciency.

Sorry I read his post to say that he averaged just over 31mpg on the 290mile journey and I was ignoring the snapshots figures that are unrepresentative of anything.

All i was doing was backing up that a real 30mpg in the M3 is quite easy to acheive.. well it is in mine. and also that some people who love cars are also quite legitmatelly interested in the MPG that they get in everyday use.

edited to add i wished i read the entire thread before posting as I wouldnt have added anything lol

Jesus this poor chap has had his E46 M3 for just one week.

I don't yet, but come February (things being as planned) I will have, and I will be the most excited I've been for such a long time. In that first week, everything will delight me, and I will want to share those things with every unfortunate bd I meet.

So cut the boy some slack, he's just excited.

You refer in your first post to an E36 Evo and from what I understand the E36 is indeed better on fuel than the E46. From memory I think the combined figure is a couple of mpg better so I can certainly see high 20's being possible in mixed driving with an E36 if mid-20's is achievable with the E46 (which it is). However, I still say 30mpg as an average in an E46 only comes with VERY gentle driving!
