Hi all,

Just considering a change of car, these are both contenders and while I realise the response may be biased (have posted in the Porsche forum too) I am interested to know peoples thoughts especially those of you who have owned both or considered/driven both before buying.

On a side note, how are either of these cars to live with after a 355 if any of you have made the change?

Also, anyone interested in a swap (+/- £s accordingly), feel free to PM me.

Thanks

Michael

I had both at the same time, M6 is now gone.... I've also driven a couple of 355's

Coming from the 355 I would suggest the 996TT to be a happy medium for driver involvement.... the m6 just reminded me of playing a computer game

Also remember the trickery of the m6 is brilliant until it starts to go wrong....

I might be interested in a swap biggrin

I think the Turbo is better looking but I love the appeal of the V10 and how imposing the M6 is, I think the interior of the M6 is a considerably nicer too.

Did either feel quicker than the other?

Were the running costs comparable if you take fuel out of the equation?

How many miles has your X50 done? biggrin

I was looking at 996TT and M6 both coupe versions. Just can`t get on with the front end of the Porsche so would have liked a 997 turbo but was out of my price range. Ended up with an M6 convertible individual which although isn`t quite as fun on the rare times I have a full on attack blast, it is a very very relaxing car to drive with EDC set to soft and in auto (S5) mode. Only had it just over a week so far and only done 300 odd miles so far. Fuel consumption is on the large side but we all know that. Over 100 leptons in full M mode (everything set to max) it is the fastest car I`ve been in.

I have a BMW M6 myself and here is how I would break it down:

M6 vs 996T = M6
M6 vs 997 2S = 50/50 (m6 is superior in every way other than the badge and cornering imho, but I been wanting a 997 for a while now)
M6 vs 355 = 355 (there is no logical process involved in this one, all donw with the heart)

Not sure how unbiased an answer you'll get posting in M-Power!
But they're very different cars.

  • Both very grunty & enough power to lose your license in no time a all
  • Porsche 911 has a degree of supercar cachet about it
  • M6 is light-years ahead in terms of modernness of design & especially spec & interior
  • M6 is a bit drug dealer, 911TT is a bit stockbroker
  • 911 Probably better for trackdays
  • At same pricepoint you'll geta newer M6 - would want a dealer warranty on these types of car

My experience is from a 996 C4S to a M6 however :

- the 911 has more presence and attracts more attention (everyone knows what a 911 is but few know what a M6 is). This can be good or bad.

- the 911 is much better on twisty bits but the M6 is much better on long runs and is still very very good on twisty bits.

- the M6 has more toys.

- the M6 is bigger and to me feels safer.

- I could drive the 4x4 911 quicker on a wet road than I can the M6 (this may be due to my lack of talent though).

- My M6 has been far far more reliable than my c4s was.

- Very different cars IMVHO - a true sports car v a true grand tourer.

355 - weekend blast, but it will feel slow compared to a 996 T, or the M6 - but more of an occation car.
996t - after driving one myself i found it ok, but suspension is not really GT, its very crashy and firm. I couldnt drive say london to manchester and not feel it....but boy is it fast.
M6 - is probably the best buy here, and buy them at £25k as they are still set to loose more money.

The 996 will hold its money the best, the 355 will require some gentle stroking, and the M6 well its a great all rounder slightly down on torque but offers real bang for buck..

This has been done to death on the Porsche forum, but the M6 actually has the legs of the 997tt also once its up and running at higher speeds. The 996 and 997 turbo's have a traction advantage to around 100mph on the M6 tho and are far quicker cross country.

In either case however, getting more power from the turbo is so easy that in many cases where you come across a turbo on the road, the M6 will be on the losing end of any straight line action.

Biggest qustion is if yoiu want performance? Both will leave the 355 for dead. If you want performance get the 911 and mod it, it does not take much money or effort to turn a 996 turbo into a 600bhp car, it will however take around 12k to get the M6 to 580bhp. Standard the M6 is quicker.

I don't like 911 interior though and could not live with it. The other problem I have with 911's is they all look the same to me! Whatever year, C2, C4 whatever all look the same!

ESS are due to launch a Supercharger kit that is more
Affordable than the G-Power alternative. Should be out November-ish. Power outputs will be in stages and upgradeable as usual; ranging from 625 to 800bhp prices will start at $12K for the complete bolt on kit.
The question I find myself asking is how do I get married next year AND get one of these kits fitted at Simpsons??

I can only imagine what one of these would do to fill in the lack of low down torque let alone the fuel consumption!!!

I am currently in the same situation, and thinking what will be the best option...

I have even thought of waiting around 6 months and let depreciation hit the 997 and the gt-r... wink

In regards to this supercharger kit from ess, the only thing that would worry me is the gearbox!

Does anyone have any info on how much power the smg from the m6 can take and is there anyway of strengthening it?

Just a thought, if you're in the market for an M6 at least try an XKR and have a look at the big AMGs

Although a supercharged M6 would no doubt be awesome, have you driven the standard car? It's not exactly slow.

If I were looking for a 996 Turbo I would try and find a low(ish) mileage, manual, X50 optioned one.

The GT-R is definitely worth a look, I'm not sure what they are doing on extended warranty for them though (tried to find out a while back but nobody knew)

The 997 Turbo is fantastic but still a lot of money

For me the big difference between the M6 and the Porsche (I only really have experience with the 997) is that the Porsche is a sports car and the M6 definitely isn't, it's a GT car. Get in a 997 after coming out of an M6 and it feels like you are sat on the floor. Also the back seats in a 997 are not usable except by the youngest of children, the back seats in the M6 are cavernous by comparison. The ride in the M6 is also better than the 997.

Although I'm an M car (especially E46 M3 cloud9 ) fan there is daylight between an M6 and 996 Turbo in terms of performance. The 996 will be faster in a straight line, around corners, in the wet, in the dry...etc...etc

On top gear on the IOM even the standard C2 was miles quicker than the M6.

But, if you want something comfy, realiable and useable for everyday driving, again, get the 996T. smile

I do not disagree with you about the difference in performance between a sports car and sport GT, but I think you have your straight line performance confused.
