I can't fault the gearbox in any driving condition, it's part of the briliance of the machine IMO
Same here, the gearbox is bloody brilliant. thr32 said:
To clarify: I did mean that the gearbox is hopeless in town. I just don't think I t is intuitive enough to drive smoothly, and its inability to stop without either jerking or starting off again is plain irritating.
You have to switch the auto wipers on after the ignition to get the light to come on. Whose idea was that?
I would reiterate that it is otherwise a pretty much faultless car.

As others have said, i find the gearbox to be perfect in every condition so perhaps yours has some kind of issue. You have to switch the auto wipers on after the ignition to get the light to come on. Whose idea was that?

If i'm in town i'm usually using the softest settings as only save the hard stuff for the open road & track & i never get any such jerking in traffic. As for the Wipers, i'm pretty sure all cars with Auto wipers need this selecting each time the car's started. I do find in heavy rain that the slowest setting is too slow, but a quick flick of the relevant switch & the sensitivity increases & all's good.

Re the wipers I think you're right as you couldn't use a car wash otherwise. If i'm in town i'm usually using the softest settings as only save the hard stuff for the open road & track & i never get any such jerking in traffic. I don't think that the DCT gearbox is either brilliant or a shambles, for me it does what you'd expect. It doesn't have many party tricks to it, Porsches PDK box with sports + is better as the gear change strategy is superb and something you don't get with DCT.
Oh and to the OP get the M5!
Oh and to the OP get the M5!
Thanks for the replies i test drove a 2012 M5 with 22000 miles at my local dealer yesterday i must say i was very impressed effortlessly quick but also very comfortable and smooth when you want it to be. I think I've ruled a new M3 out as I've never had a car on PCP before and i think id lose more money on that than buying a used M5. Just got to test drive an RS4 now to get that out of my head then my search can begin!!

as i discovered this morning when i went to load my bike into the boot. the seats don't fold down on the M5. It might be an extra which my dad's doesnt have. for me this is enough to rule it out!
Must be a very odd shaped bike as i have a full sized road bike & it fits in the boot of my M5 & i didn't bother with the seat folding option.Better yet, get a decent roof rack as a much better use of space & for the F10 with Black Thule Aero bars they actually look pretty cool.
Like it!
its my dads car which i'm borrowing for 2 weeks. wont bother investing in the roof rack although has one for my last two cars and it definitely makes like easier.
I've got a Large 650b MTB and with wide handlebars it was all proving too tricky to get it into the boot. maybe it could have gone with a bit more patience but i had to get to work!
