No turning back - E30 M3 respray
Discussion
Well having had the stress of being made redundant the week before last, I managed to agree to start a new job this morning so first things first head straight to the bodyshop with the E30 for a bare metal respray.
Spent a week or so in a tiny garage starting to strip it down and have agreed that I will be taking all of the old paint off over the next three days in order to keep costs down.
The guys at www.sprcoachworks.co.uk will then be welding in a new scuttle panel, sorting out the rear arches and rear numberplate suround and few other minr bits and then giving the car a fully respay in Henna red hopefully in time for the summer but not in time for this weekends rolling road day.
Hopefully will manage to have a good look at cleaning up the interior and have been told i'm not aloud to take it home until the wheels are refurbed!
PS. who says you can't tow with an E36 M3 seamed fine to me.

Looks like a similar task although I wish mine was an Evo Sport.
I think my scuttle is a bit worse than yours but the rest seams fairly similar, fron arches are very clean but backs will need some work. Luckily once the paint is off i'm pritty much handing it over to the body shop to weld and paint.
They guy whos painting its done loads of work on E30 M3's so hopefully will manage to take the difficult bits off without damaging them.
Luckly under the bonnts very clean as far as the body work goes so thats one less thing to get involved in as i'm told they can rust below the fuse box which is a pain as the fuse box is hard wired.
PS if mine looks anywhere as good as yours once its done i'll be very happy.

I know what you mean about the stamping on the scuttle, picked mine up last week, its not great. Was suprised how cheap it was £40 is a bargin for a special order part.
Looks like we might only need a couple of small parts of the scuttle so hopefully will be able to leave the original chassis number in place.
Playo, how comes your selling, I can't think of a car I want more without spending alot of cash, thought about 911's and I know they be faster but not as much fun. Only thing i think i'd sell it for at the moment is a 355 or maybe a 911 turbo but I'm not sure that either will fit in my garage so expect to be keeping the M3 for a while.

Where did you get a towbar for the E36 from?
got it from http://www.watling-towbars.co.uk/ fitted myself although i thick you'd want a ramp which luckly my friend has. Really wouldn't have wanted to do it without.Yeh, will be well worth it. Its needed painting for a couple of years but I couldn't afford to do it so it has sat in the garage for a year or so. Couldn't bring myself to sell it.
Had a constructive day, cars now striped down except for all of the glass and sunroom, One of the guys at the paintshop has rubbed down the bumpers and side skirts. Was pleased to see that the cills were good as i was worried about what i might find under the skirts.
Tomorrow I have the joy of rubbing down as much of the car as possible without removing the glass, Then hopefully friday the glass can come out and i finish rubbing now the rest.
Theres only a couple of very minor pin dents on either side so there shouldn't be a great deal of filler anywhere.

Only kidding fella, good luck with the repaint and remember to post some progress pictures.
Oh and never sell it I regretted selling mine since the moment it went.
Z3MCoupe is helping ease the pain at the moment though.
here's a few pic's of the work in progress, worsed of the rust is around the number plate lights, nothing to bad elsewhere but needs sorting now before it becomes an issue.
The worsed of the arches
I've now handed it over to the guys at the bodyshop to finish stripping the paint off as they wanted to leave things like the door handles in as long as possible.

That was certainly quick. By the looks of it you won't have much time to save up to pay for it mate.
Their not hanging around, The main car and front wings are now in primer, couldn't take any pics as the camera's not charged. There's going to be a slight wait for the paint as the guys who supply the colour scheme haven't created codes for Henna red in the latest type of paint yet and expect it to take a week or so.
Think its something to do with all paint for cars going over to water based.

How much (roughly) will this cost ?
i've been thinking about buying a modern classic BMW with a view to getting it resprayed.
It would be slightly unfair for me to say as i'm getting a good deal as i know both directors of the bodyshop very well and so they are doing me a good rate and letting me do the boring time consuming work myself. I would have thought to give them the car whole and pick up following a complete respray would be around £3-4K but don't really knowi've been thinking about buying a modern classic BMW with a view to getting it resprayed.
Quick update, most of the car is now in primer bar the boot lid, and the panel under the healights, which i need to remove this week. PS don't worry the wheels were only on while the originals were reconditioned. They arrived back today and are looking very nice.
Ive also been scotching off and respaying all of the black plastic trim with satin black paint, these bits are all starting to look a hell of a lot less faded. Example below which was very faded, I won't bore people by posting all of the pics!
Also collected all new badges, fog light surrounds, door handles and a few other parts from Munich legends today so once the shell painted I can get on with putting it back together.
Just need to get hold of the guys i've been recomended to retrim the front seats and I should soon have a nicely sorted M3.
Plan is to use it for whats left of the summer and look at refurbing a few bits under the bonnet over the winter.

I would have thought around 2 months, but if the bodyshop was working on it full time maybe 3-4 weeks.
Because of the price i'm paying i've told them not to rush if they get work which is going to pay better and be in and out in a few days although they do seam to have cracked on with it, so hopefully I'll get to use it before winter.
