Well after picking up my M3 last weekend and driving it the 290 miles to work I was managing just over 31MPG around 80MPH.
When I upped my speed slightly I still averaged over 29MPG
At a 10 mile stretch on the M1 near Nottingham there are average speed cameras and a 50MPH speed limit. I set it on cruise to 50MPH and reset the MPG computer......After 10 miles....47.8MPG!!!
I am amazed at the MPG these cars achieve, and am so happy i bought it. A trip to the pumps and some mathematics proves the figures right.

Does everyone else get this or are you all heavy footed?

Wow, Some people are missing the point completely.
When i drive fast i achieve 23 MPG. When I drive on the UK roads at UK road speeds I achieved the figures stated.
I have A Toyota Starlet Glanza turbo which is only a 1.3 and that isnt as good on the 300 mile trips (average 28mpg).

Those who mentioned Subarus I can vouch as I had one and it was terrible.

I am not a penny pincher trying to save the planet, only mentioning what an achievment this engine is.

M3RMS....Your driving style cant be any good then for fuel economy. There is boring driving and being stuck in Xmas traffic doing normal motorway speeds. Thats what i was doing.
While i was going at these speeds i wasnt putting my foot down like a Cock in amoungst the traffic.

Rawhide...totally agree. when cold MPG very low, but over the distance it evened up to 32.something yesterday. still going at 80- 85mph when I could.

average around town is about 23mpg. luckily I use the car for long motorway trips, and achieve much more with my driving style.

How does filling up a whole tank prove that trip computer figures over only short distances are correct?
I didnt work out a 10 mile stretch,I am not that bothered to be honest. only the average after 300+ miles.
I bought the car expecting 20MPG, The purpose of this thread is to see if others manage the figures I get...clearly some do and some dont.
it depends on the driver.
To blame the computer is a easy way out of the argument as ive proved its correct.

If you genuinely have an M3 that's returning 45+ mpg at a steady 50 mph then I'm very impressed.

All I'm saying though is that having covered 10's of thousands of miles across 2 different M3s that I just can't see how that's at all possible without some considerable coasting.

But I could be wrong, so am quite willing to try it myself and report back the findings.....
you missed the point too.

I dont coast at all.

have aword with yourself!

Do you call 300 miles a short distance?

Well, I am off sick now and not having the pleasure of another drive until the new year.
as most are asking when i topped up the tank after the whole journey and including a few miles running around the town it was just over 29mpg (cant remember exactly)
I think about 10 miles town driving dropped it from the computer figures, but I had reset it anyway and around town only reading 23mpg.
I still think its good on a long run, For what the car is its impressive MPG figures, those who think its not must be comparing it to a diesel as ive not seen many other 343BHP cars returning that.

Merry Xmas and happy new year!

Hi guys

I certainly didn't mean to come across as patronising - so apologies if I've come across that way.

But the fact does remain that I believe that the 45mpg figure isn't accurate - even if the mpg over the 'whole' journey was validated at the pump. And as such I think it's fair game making the point (and then remaking it when challenged).

Perhaps I should work on my presentation skills however......

Anyway, happy Christmas folks.

Cheers
RS

Oops think ive just pressed this twice!

Get yourself to the M1 roadworks put it on cruise at 50mph then reset the trip computer. carry on for 10 miles and bish bosh MPG in the late 40s. They can do it.
Jackie Stewart once said dont press the accelerater if you know you have to take your foot off......A bit difficult sometimes on Britains roads but it makes sense.

Jesus this poor chap has had his E46 M3 for just one week.

I don't yet, but come February (things being as planned) I will have, and I will be the most excited I've been for such a long time. In that first week, everything will delight me, and I will want to share those things with every unfortunate bd I meet.

So cut the boy some slack, he's just excited.
Cheers fella!
Ive noticed a lot of people wanting to race me too which I tend to ignore for a few minutes.......and then give them a damn good thrashing!
Its always the same cars too.....ST Focus, Megane225. Do these cars come with an race an M3 button? because it doesnt work.
