What the roundabout pic doesn't show is that it's at the end of a long, relatively straight piece of dual-carriageway that can be very high speed. If one wanted to, it would be quite easy to enter that roundabout at considerable speed. The kind of speed that might cause that sort of impact. I'm speculating of course, but I can't imagine a side-impact from a car pulling out of Saino's car park could do that sort of damage to a car crossing the roundabout.
I drove through there this evening, and noticed that a sign had been knocked down at the end of the dual carrigeway which would suggest that he came down the dual carrigeway, hit the island with the sign, and ended up going the wrong way around the roundabout.

The missing sign is the one on the triangular island.

To be clear about this: It was the Vectra that was on the dual carriageway and hit the traffic island. The Mazda was rounding the roundabout after exiting from the retail park. Witnesses said he was hit on the roundabout by a vehicle coming the other way on the wrong side of the road.

Was it? The pictures that I saw suggested otherwise, as the MX5 had side damage and the Vectra had front.

I may be wrong, but I'd be interested to hear any information you may have.

Looks horrific, my thoughts go out to all involved.

I would assume it was a considerable impact as that sort of damage doesn't occur at 30mph usually from my understanding. Interesting that the people in the vectra are both okay.

I don't think about what will happen if I crash or else I'd never get in half of the cars I love (nor my mx). If it happens then it happens its a risk that comes with my enjoyment. I'm of the view you could miss out on everything you love in order to minimise the risk of being badly injured in an accident etc yet fall down the stairs and break your neck.

The inquest for this accident was held on 15th Oct and, in summary, the findings were as follows.

His death was due to multiple injuries in a road traffic accident. The cause of the accident was not confirmed.

There was no evidence that the MX5 was being driven in anything but a safe, controlled and legal manner. The MX5 was mechanically sound.

The Vauxhall Vectra mounted the kerb on the approach to the roundabout, crossed the traffic island, and entered the roundabout against the direction of traffic where it impacted the MX5. Onlookers estimated the speed of the Vectra to be in the region of 50 MPH. The Vectra driver had no recollection of the approach to the roundabout or of the impact. The Vectra was mechanically sound. The police accident investigator said there appeared to have been no steering or braking input immediately prior to the collision.

The other driver has suffered in this as well. There are no winners in this case.

Well let's all hope he now gives up driving after taking medical advice and listening to his conscience. It's for the best after all.
