Well done Mike; you win shed-of-the-thread so far!

wink
you've obviously never driven a Viva HL like me or an Austin 1100 like gdaybruce (a girlfriends mum had one which I borrowed sometimes so I know how it feels i.e. an empty box with seats, wheels and an engine. Plenty of space but absolutely no comfort or thought of luxury whatsoever).
My mrs used to have a Metro however, a 1275 GT and while it was a bit of a shed it was. Great car to fling along a country road with oversteer available that could bd controlled with the throttle, in fact in many ways it was similar to an MX5 -slow but great fun.
Actually, the Austin 1100 was pretty good - a Mini with a lot more space but equally wonderful steering and roll free cornerning. No, it was the Allegro that takes the wooden spoon. Good points: the velour seats were quite comfy and it had a 5 speed box. The bad points: absolutely everything else! Less space than the 1100, dumbed down steering, numb handling, an asthmatic engine and rust that spread before your very eyes. And original spec Dunlops that, even with loads of tread, would start to float on a wet road at 60mph in a straight line (the only time you were likely to get wheelspin!). Extraordinary!

Interesting to analyse MX5 owners' car history. A lot of poeple seem to have owned an Alfa at some point - a rite of passage, perhaps?

Terrible. biggrin

It's all in the profile, but to date:

  • 1987 Volkswagen Polo 1.3 (the estate/breadvan type, I was offered it by a family member and it was an ideal if slightly sensible first car really.)
  • 1991 Ford Orion 1.6 (looking back it was pretty rubbish, but when you're a student you'll forgive a lot for electric windows and a sunroof, won't you?)
  • 1999 Alfa Romeo 156 2.0TS (so, about that Alfa ownership thing... it was bloody expensive to keep on the road, but I'd rather have had the bills than not had the car.)
  • 1996 Mazda 626 GXi (had an engine, some wheels and some seats I think. Sold it on for an emigrating colleague, ran around in it a bit while cleaning it up for sale.)
  • 1998 Vauxhall Omega 2.5 V6 (stopgap car bought after Alfa ownership stepped over that particular line from expensive to ruinous. Refused to die. Nothing like your first taste of oversteer being to get nearly two tonnes and five metres sideways.)
  • 1991 Mazda MX-5
  • 2002 Volvo S60 2.4t (not so much point buying a "driver's" saloon car with the MX-5 in the garage, it'd only annoy me by not being as good. Bought something with comfortable seats and a great stereo instead.)

Well, it's quite interesting I suppose... Bear in mind I turned 17 in July '05:

October 04 - May 06 : Peugeot 106 Quiksilver
Started modifying this by fitting a GTi Spoiler and lowering it.

May 06 - November 06 : Peugeot 307 HDi 'S'
Modifying carried on by fitting bigger wheels to this.
November 06 -> December 07 : SEAT Ibiza TDi Sport. Bought brand new - sold after 13 months and 33k miles - was a costly decision to make!

December 07 - December 08 : Ford Mondeo ST TDCi
This was another economical mile muncher, though a bit of a strange car for a 19 year old! Did 25k over 12 months - was a great car and handled really well, though required a lot of money being spent on it!

December 08 - June 09 : Mazda MX-5 1.8i Sport
My mk2.5 was amazing, though on my first track day I managed to spin it twice which lost my confidence in the car entirely. As such I sold it and moved on.

June 09 - September 09 : Renault Clio 182
Bought this as I fancied getting back into my "hatchback" roots. It was really quick but I had to nail it everywhere to keep in the power band (5k to 6,750rpm). As such I was nearly always above the speed limit!

September 09 - MX-5 2.0i Sport
I sold the Clio and bought another '5. I've since had it lowered and the geometry done and I love it. Just waiting for the summer to arrive now!!

Gained licence in nov 2003 19

Nov 03 - Apr 04
1989 Ford Escort 1.3 Popular 60k

in a nice non metallic blue. given to me for free by dad. in my efforts of 'tuning' put some pepperpots from a sierra on it, and also installed uprated escort diesel van suspension. rode high like a tractor, admittedly with minimal body roll, but then minimal handling also

Apr 04 - Aug 04
1990 VW Golf mk2 1.6 50k £800

lovely condition red body, bought to replace the wheezing CVH powered ford. Though an 8v carb it still offered more punch and a good habit for lift off. bought the seats, Pirelli P slot alloys and suspension from a 150k 8v gti a work college crashed - never really handled the same again - front end rose in ride height and made it super understeery

smashed the golf to bits a day before my birthday attempting to integrate it with a telegraph pole after a 'couple' of ales. Licence suspended until Dec 05. silly boy..

Dec 05 - Jan 06
1985 VW Polo 1.0 round the clock £50

again, in ubiquitous red. seats replaced by previous owner with some found at the side of the road. dents all over it. the fuel lines had turned to sponge so it leaked petrol everywhere. the tank had gone rusty so it would leave you stranded until the sediment settled - usually in the outside lane of a motorway or in the middle of nowhere, in the snow at 11pm. the seller informed me he crashed into, and wrote off a 5 series with it. after parting with £50 this became evident as it only really rested the majority of its weight on the rear near side and front offside. terrible car, flared the arches with a hammer and chisel to fit my P slots in an attempt to improve the handling

Jan 06 - Jun 06
1991 Rover Metro 1.4 GTa 105k £350

Storm Grey. bought as an upgrade to the polo. to be honest a shoe box on a rollerskate would've been an upgrade, mind that's what this was referred to often. head gasket went pop just before i bought it. spent probably £1k converting it to injection + putting a new engine in

Jun 06 - Aug 06
1990 VW Scirocco Scala mk2 1.8 85k £600

wanted more performance, was recommended one of these over a Golf gti 8v. great car, the P slots went back on, obviously, and bought uprated vw suspension. had a piper 285 cam fitted which brought the power up a bit

the car got T boned by a blind woman a couple of days before my birthday. wishbone pickup points got moved so the car was a write off

Aug 06 - Dec 06
1989 VW Scirocco Scala mk2 1.8 150k £300

dog. body was okish, though someone had resprayed it with the wrong paint. engine trouble. transplanted pretty much everything from the previous scirocco into this one. back on the road with a better geo it was a great fun little car

it wasn't to be - on the 13th of Dec a defender pulled out on me, off the road with broken bones until Mar 07

Mar 07 - Jun 09

back to the metro. blew the head gasket on this engine, so sorted the cooling system and fitted a tuned 1600. suspension lowered + stiffened and a low ratio box fitted, it was an absolute stormer for what it was, put a lot of lift off back into the chassis, was a great car

Jun 09 - Present
1989 Eunos Mariner Blue 115k £1900

Previous owners track toy. setup and repaired by Paul Sheard with a ported head, stainless jasma + mongoose exh, hard dog m2 and ATS DTC 15's. absolute base model, ripped out all the aircon to save weight. changed belts, filters, cooling system inc. rad. softened up the front a little

just needs a JRSC :-p

'99 Mk4 Vauxhall disAstra (inherited off Mum, not technically mine but I looked after it). The stest most average car imaginable.

'96 N Ford Escort, 1.6 16V 'Si', metallic puke Green. My first own car. Better than the Astra in every way.

'99 Peugeot 306 GTi-6. Superb, fast, stylish and discreet. Bought on Uni placement year, most I've ever spent on a car @ £2650 (Thats a lot when your on £800 a month). Back seats used approximately 3 times. Which leads to..

'94 Eunos Roadster S-Special. cloud9 so much cheaper than the 306 was to buy and run. Still got it, obviously. Still completely smitten, no plans to change for a while yet. Will likely be the longest kept of all my cars, which says a lot. After my first year with it as my only car, did a lot of miles, felt like I should keep it for 'fun' only. So I also bought...

'92 Audi 80 2.0. Like timberwolf i went for something as polar opposite from the mazda as possible. Massive, roly-poly silent barge.
Also holds claim to 'slowest car in history of humanity'.

That one comment alone has hammered home to me just how stupid I was spending over £7k on a car on no less than 3 occasions when I was only on slightly more than that at the time. frown

1973-4: 1963 Hillman Imp, previously blue but resprayed really badly in aubergine so it looked like it was covered in purple orange peel. Lowered.
1974-5: 1964 Hillman Imp, red, Dunlop D1 alloys, rollcage, 998cc Rallye engine with Sport head, R17 camshaft, twin Strombergs and 4-branch exhaust. Lowered.
1975-6: 1964 Hillman Imp, blue. Ford 1100 engine (using a Corsair crossmember and Jack Knoght adaptor to the original gearbox). Lowered, Astrali 13" alloys on rear to raise the gearing. Rollcage.
1976-8: Triumph Vitesse 2000 convertible.
1978-80: Hillman Avanger 1250. Turquoise, later resprayed metallic blue and fitted with KN Gemini alloys. Gutless in a straight line but cornered better than the Vitesse.
1980-82: Triumph 2.5 PI. st brown.
1982-3: Mini Clubman estate, bottle green. Someone had fitted the oldest, tiredest 850 engine you ever saw.
1983: Renault 18, red. Inherited this when my Dad died, couldn't get rid of it quickly enough.
1983-8: Capri 2.0S, white.
1988-92: Fiesta 1.3S, beige. No slower than the Crapi in my opinion!
1992-3: Cavalier 1.6GL, silver.
1993-5: Rover 216SE, pale metallic blue. Horrible.
1995-9: Peugeot 405GL. Lovely, handled like a dream.
1999-2001: Escort 1.6 LX, burgundy. My first 16-valve car.
2001-4: Porsche 944 2.7.
2009 onwards: Eunos Roadster RS-Limited.

From 2003 onwards there's also a collection of tuition cars but I won't bore you with those.

Ah yes, Hillman Imps! Before I could afford a suitable car I started my rallying career (career?!) navigating in one and have fond memories, despite throwing up on every event we did. The sound of the engine behind you, revving to 8,000rpm at a time when most engines gave out at 5,000 and Honda VTECs were the stuff of science fiction, was really great. Mind you, what happened to the handling when you swapped the all alloy climax engine for a Ford cast iron lump?
