The mk3 really isn't that much bigger after all, it just looks it in isolation. Good bit heavier though.
I've said this before and I'll say it again:

Mk1 kerb weight: c. 1020kg (1.8i)
Mk3 kerb weight: c. 1095kg (2.0i Sport)

Mk1 dimensions: 3975mm (length) x 1675mm (width)
Mk3 dimensions: 3995mm (length) x 1720mm (width)

I think the heaviest Mk3 is 1120kg and that has a folding hard top. 65kg is just over 10 stone - so not really a good bit heavier - the weight of a passenger? smile

There really isn't much in it in 'real life'. Here's our MK3.5 alongside Batty's MK1
Funny you say that, I always thought the mk3 was huge compared to the mk1 until one came out on a run with us and I saw the pictures afterwards... The mk3 really isn't that much bigger after all, it just looks it in isolation. Good bit heavier though.

That incorrect I've had mine on the weighbridges several times, when it was basically stock my 1997 mk 1.8 was 960kg with a brimmed fuel tank. 1.6 mk1's are even lighter, in the region of 930kg.

Oh there's no doubting it's a bit heavier, but I can't say I can feel it on the road. The handling really is sublime. It's also more powerful and faster, but I can't say so much as I really feel that either tbh. It is just as beautifully balanced as the Mk1.

Booked in for the WIM treatment next week. Looking forward to seeing the 'befores' almost as much as the 'afters' seeing as it's currently as Mazda 'intended' hehe
