Decat - More noisy?
Discussion
Last night I was at a PlanetMX5 meet in the PlanetMX5 Motorsports car. It's an L reg 1.6 a straight cat-bypass and an old Larini back box (fitted at the same time last weekend).
There was another older 1.6 with a silenced cat-bypass and Larini back box and yet another with non-silenced cat-bypass and MX-5 Parts back box.
They all sounded very similar with the last one being slightly deeper in tone and the Motorsports car being the tinniest though there was really very little in it.
I have to say that since fitting the cat & back-box on the Motorsports car I really love driving it! Yes it's noisy and far from refined (my own car is noisy but still feels refined somehow) but it's just such a hoot to to thrash it around! It seems to have added quite a bit to the mid-range though that might be due to the old cat and/or back-box (back-box was some odd after-market item) being restrictive rather than actually being much of an improvement over stock.
In fact it feels so good I'm seriously considering selling my Focus and getting a dirt-cheap Mk1 as a runabout.
Compared to my Mk2.5 it gives a false impression of speed i.e 50mph feels like 90mph in the Mk2.5 but that's not a bad thing. If you can have as much fun at 40mph less that can only be good for your licence
That's well off-topic though so I'll shut up

Do it, they are ludicrously cheap now. Look in the classifieds, there is a tidy looking blue one that sold on here for £875, if I didn't have a company hack I'd definately be using my ratty little MK1 on a day to day basis. Edited by MX-5 Lazza on Thursday 13th November 14:46

Fitted the decat this morning, not really noticeably louder TBH....
I have some sort of JDM stainless rear section on there, but it is a two box system, one big rear box and a smaller one before the bend, maybe this is why. Can't see any markings on there to say what make it is or anything....

I went up the Larini route.
I have an unsilenced decat pipe, and Larini sports exhaust.
Mines a 1.6 1991.
It sounds like a beast now..very loud and tuneful exhaust.
If you type into youTube 'larini', you can get a variety of different cars filmed with it in use.
Do you reckon you could get some sort of sound clip up of it revving? I'm planning on going down the same route (albeit with a silenced decat pipe) and like to know how it'll sound beforehand! I have an unsilenced decat pipe, and Larini sports exhaust.
