My earliest car 'memories' as perhaps a 4 or 5 year old (bearing in mind we didn't have a car back then.....bicycles, yes - just not cars) - was my grandfathers pre WW2 Ford 8 when he retired and moved out close to us 'in the sticks' and oing out in his friend Mr Dix's then nearly new beige coloured Austin Somerset and hitting a German Shepherd dog (although not heavily). The 'thing' that probably started me off with cars was standing outside our house located on the main road from Wickford to Burnham on Crouch with my Dad and counting-off all the different makes of cars returning from a day out at at Burnham marina. Learning the differing sounds of specific makes. My father although not healthy enough to hold a driving license as an engineer loved the design elements of cars and aircraft, often making tooling for the aircraft industry. Cars like Bristols and Citroen DS's facinated him. The real 'thing' that we both loved was the local garage owners open top LeMans style 20's/30's Bentley. On warm summer evenings the owner would go out and race up and down some of the straighter local 'A' roads......you could hear that car for miles. My Dad's 'interest' in cars meant that the first car we eventually bought for Mum to drive was a 5 year old Hillman Californian.....when did you last see one of those?
Well I never got to view the TA’s
Waited around for 1/2 an hour outside the guys workshops
Just got a call he apologised and got held up at a Mot down the road,
May get to have a look tomorrow morning
But failing that it will have to be after Easter
In the big plan another fortnight won’t makes any difference!
I’d have waited longer but I’d picked my granddaughter from school and promised her a Maccy D
So she started getting tetchy !

That's a pain, I reckon you'd have had it finished over the Easter weekend! Waited around for 1/2 an hour outside the guys workshops

So.....
A week to go to Wheels Day.......who' else is going?
Its at a new location, so not sure if I'll go.
I suspect as a result of it being so far away, Billy won't be having his usual Wheels Day open day either.
Too far for me - 220 mile round trip on Good Friday? Nope.A week to go to Wheels Day.......who' else is going?

I'll be going a far more acceptable 8 miles on Easter Saturday to watch the Classic Touring Cars at Donington.

Edit - this looks interesting on Saturday 11th May.

Easy 250 for me too!
Zero chance! M25 nightmare, and junction closed on the M2
I’m going nowhere

In other news engine is back in the Mercury, but need to take it out again to fix a leaking core plug.
'Ere tis, ain't it grand...?
The black C3 in front of it was sucking all the light from the room but I thought it was rather nice, I sat in it for a minute or two and felt right at home...
There were also three earlier chrome bumper C3 s in another hall...
The '52 Buick made me smile...
This '66 notchback was ok-ish but didn't really get the juices flowing, I sat in it for a while and found the driver's window winder wasn't connected to anything...!
I was expecting to really like it but found I was far more interested in the Italians and even the two Beetle based Porsche replicas (a 356 Speedster and 718 RSK), which ticked a few boxes. A genuine 356 is just silly money now so it's no wonder the reps are popular, and some of them aren't that cheap either. I spent a good couple of hours looking at the auction stuff today and could've happily bid on any one of a dozen or so for different reasons if I had the room to keep one of them - the S3 Alfa Spider, the gorgeous blue '59 Alfa Giulietta Sprint, rr's C2, the Speedster rep, the Lancia Fulvia Coupe, Bentley S3 saloon, the 15k miles Rover P6, the fawn coloured S1 XJ6, the cute little RHD Fiat 500 amongst them.
Going back tomorrow with a mate for another shuftie.
NB : I didn't buy any books today but I did do a charity ride in the Alfa Giulia 1750GT...

Preview of the NEC auction here, nice looking C2 lurking in the background at around the 18 minute mark.
Love Jonny to death, always thought he was underrated as a TV presenter but he will never be a Shmee notthat i want him to be but there are lots of beautiful classics at the auction today both high end and affordable
odd ball stuff and there him whittling on about Brown Rover p6's ,Capri's,MG Metro's along with 4 or 5 Mini's
and the most ugly lhd Volvo i've ever seen,,
I know a certain person on the forum who could listen to him rattling on about them for hours but out of
220 stunning classics for god sake why pick that lot out,
He gets paid by the auction to make a video promoting their brand ,they earn a higher commission rate out of the high
reserve lots ,tha'ts the ones they are paying him for,He's currently restoring a Austin Allegro ,good job there wasn't one entered
in the auction as that would have taken up most of the video,
He seems to have a soft spot for the under dog as we all do but that's not going to help the auction financially.
He needs to watch one of Harry's Iconic auction videro's ,he may learn something before they give him the elbow.

Now you mention it even back in the day you hardly saw a California,Compared to the clinical Minx saloon it must have looked outrageous.
The California and the Austin Metropolitan in their usually bright two tone
colour schemes must have seemed like a breath of fresh air in the 50's

Was wondering what was happening with the Mercury, In other news engine is back in the Mercury, but need to take it out again to fix a leaking core plug.
That must be a real pain having to do all that work again,
Silverstone sounds interesting ,2 hour drive compared to almost 4 hours to Donington.
