Not burst yet!!
Was staying at Gleneagles at the weekend for wife’s birthday. Popped into the Rolex shop and she saw a lovely 28 Datejust with oyster bracelet, fluted bezel and pink dial. Was about £7k.
Salesman came out asked us to sit down got it out the cabinet and put it on her wrist.
She said she loved it and as it was her birthday (50th) she’d just buy it as a present to herself.
Salesman said it wasn’t for sale took it off her wrist and put it back in the cabinet.
What the actual feck! I actually laughed at him and said what’s the point of you having models in a hotel where guests would purchase on the spur of the moment to be told no!
Pissed me off a bit and left a bit of a sour note on a fantastic weekend.
Thought about mentioning it to the hotel GM as it doesn’t reflect well on them having an outlet on their premises that could give a guest a lasting feeling of dissatisfaction after spending a lot of money to stay there.
Tbh it saved us £7k as it would have been a spur of the moment thing and she barely wears her bimetal datejust and never wears her omega constellation.
It’s hardly even a difficult model to get, is it?
You’re new here aren’t you hehe

I’ve been waiting for a larger DJ for my wife for bloody months now. Quite surprised as I’ve never waited more than a few weeks on the other watches we’ve bought from them.

I’m not new here I’ve a new account as some unhappy muppet got me banned over the use of a word that has since found in no way to be sectarian.
I just thought things had gotten a bit better. I bought a bimetal rose gold yachtmaster 40mm this time last year by chance as I was in the dealer and he took it out the window for me. I’d went in to ask about a waiting list for it.
Maybe I should have messaged Wheelspinning for an introduction. Although it was only a young guy working in the shop (wearing a panda Daytona)!

It's an interesting point though around having ADs in very high tourist areas.

If you're only visiting for a week on Holiday how the hell are you ever going to build up the buying history / cuppy etc..

My AD is in Laguna Beach which is probably 50/50 locals to tourists at any point in time and when I got my Air King they were telling me they only serve the locals and never have enough stock to also sell to tourists and want to prioritize the locals.

I had the same story in Maui which is probably 80/20 locals vs Tourists.

There’s a new ‘stand alone’ Rolex shop opening in Southampton. Why would you bother if there’s zero stock?

Marketing / Brand.

Think of it as a marketing experience rather than a purchasing one.

I'm not saying I like it, but thats generally what these stores are for now.. a flashy place to make the connection to the brand and try on a few watches to fall in love and feel special.

Same reason people put adverts on billboards on the side of motorways.

There is plenty of supply. Rolex have continued to make efforts to increase production.

Most of it just gets allocated before it reaches a shelf, this is changing. The number of models which are now trading at, or close to, RRP is growing and as a result the number of buyers is shrinking.

This seems to have happened to a few people ie they've waited for a DJ for much longer than anticipated given that they've had SS sports models in the past.
I was told by an AD that even though the DJ is relatively 'common' if you want a specific configuration it maybe some time before that exact model comes in ie size, bracelet, fluted/smooth and of course dial colour

It was on her wrist, the exact model
She liked it. Don’t get the whole try it on smoozing you to get you excited about it only to pull the rug away. He did say they had a nice day date he could sell her.
Again I don’t get that. Go in to car dealer to buy a convertible and you sit in and are told you can’t buy it but there’s a lovely truck you can have.
Puts you off the whole thing tbh. It does Not create a “want” it pushes my missus the other way.

There are Rolex shops at Heathrow. I recently dropped into the one in T5 and asked, with a friendly smile, if they had anything they could sell me. Answer was no, until they had a delivery.

We then had a pleasant chat about what models my wife and I have and have had and availability. Apparently the OP celebration/multicolour (which I don’t like) is extremely scarce.

Yes I think I wrote the same on here a while back. There’s a LOT of combinations of DJ. However we’ve widened it to I believe 3 different versions now and maybe even an OP but there we are.

Seems the watch I am after Air King are now selling (unworn) for now about close to retail £6.5k … I am happy with that getting tired of playing the waiting game.

I think you'll get one of those slightly under retail now.

I wanted one, but recently tried one on alongside a blue dial OP 41 and decided I preferred the latter.

It does mean it can be worn at that depth.
It really doesn't.

It basically means that it could survive that pressure, in laboratory conditions, once.
Don't ever take a 5m depth rated watch to a swimming pool, even if the pool is only 2m deep.
Is this the discussion around static pressure vs movement-induced pressure changes?

Somewhere on the Divers Watch section of the WatchUSeek forum there's a whole thread dedicated to (IIRC) a 'splashproof' casio quartz being taken diving to good depths. lol
The £10 casio F91 has been taken to some ridiculous depths.

That's the one, thank you! smile

I could have walked out of my local AD with one the other week, went in for a look. Really nice watch but looked like a lady watch on my wrist so not for me.

Out of interest the dealer, Michael Jones in Northampton, is soon to expand into an adjacent unit including a more seggregated Rolex area

Is there?......that would be odd as Laings have not long moved to a HUGE new unit in West Quay that has a bespoke Rolex area in it.
There is also a beautiful Patek section too (and a couple of other brands I think).

Well, it’s the next door unit, so I guessed it was theirs.

Anyone had 'the call' about a SS Sub/GMT etc recently.
Be nice to have a few more of these filtering into actual shops.
Not getting my hopes up anytime soon though.
