I have stacks of watches and just wish my wife had gone to the trouble to choose me a watch!!!

I would have loved a vintage Rolex Submariner, so much so I had to buy my own. I got my for £3.5k which fits your budget and the chunky style and you know he likes Rolex.

Another idea would be a IWC mark 12. Not vintage exactly but a reasonable size and a becoming more collectable

Best of all if you get a nice vintage piece you can be sure that it won't be the same as all of his mates'.

Breguet type 20 are nice but small for a chronograph, Omega nice but way to common and use the same old generic ETA parts, JLC worth considering.

I think it comes down to what you think will best suit him but at the end of the day the fact that you have gone to so much trouble to choose something for him will likely mean more than the actual choice of watch itself. Go with your instinct you know him best!!!

Agony aunt bit over.
